I can’t say they looked awful. But some of the best food I’ve had came from unassuming places in Costa Rica and Mexico. Simple food. Kind people.
Scenarios and atmospheres have as much to do with how good the food taste as anything. Somebody said the same thing in the “best poboy” thread but it’s true. “Nachos” with goat cheese in Jaco has probably been the best food I’ve ever had.

When I worked construction during college, a Mexican lady would sell plate lunches out of her car and after some convincing I started getting them. Still the best tamales I’ve ever had.
Think it was sole old shitty Saturn that she drove

Oasis in Presidio, Tx, best Mexican food I've ever had, and I went back 2 years ago to verify it was as good as I remembered and it definitely was.

When we were in high school in Natchez, especially as seniors when we got out early, we’d go to this hole in the wall bbq place called E&T’s BBQ Heaven. We’d order a burger called the Big Agnes. It came with grilled onions, mushrooms, lettuce, onions, cheese, etc, with a smoked patty. Quite the dump, but a delicious meal. Back in the early 2000’s you could get a pretty huge burger and fries for about $4

I have a similar experience with curried goat from the roadside in Jamaica.
Second was a place called witts BBQ and diner on hwy 79 and Stateline Rd in Bethany, LA. It was a nasty looking place but the BBQ was insane. Witt died and they tried to keep it going, just didn't work out.

Craigs in Devalls Bluff, Arkansas.
It's a shack, but it's everything that you want from a small delta town BBQ joint. Best known for their pork sandwiches that you can order mild, medium, or hot. Bring cash.
Service isn't that fast, so call ahead when you are 20 or 30 minutes out. The phone call will go like this:
-Ring, ring (this can go on for a while), ring, ring-
Waitress: "Craigs"
Me: "I'll take three hot"
Waitress: "Okay"
-click-

The shrimp burger at Raul's after a game. That kitchen looks nasty. The last time I ate there, I bit into a staple.

There was an Old Man who would cook hamburgers at the end of "The Strip" by USL back in the day. By the Car place.
Not sure if they were really good, but at 2am when your dog shite hammered it may have been the greatest burger ever. Sure seemed like it back then.

Behind The Clermont Lounge/Inn, there is a fella that has a grill and sells pulled pork sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, etc. All crazy good. I have no idea why he doesn't have a food truck or restaurant.
The Project Lounge in Biloxi. Awesome cheeseburgers and cold beer.

Yo Mama’s Hamburgers in the FQ back in the day. Can’t even imagine the roaches and rats that were most certainly lurking around in that back kitchen. But a damn good burger, I haven’t been back since it reopened.

Funny you listed this place. Wife and I stopped there on our way to Fayetteville. Maybe we shoulda had the sandwich! She had a pork plate and I had a brisket plate. Both weren’t good. There was a steady stream of locals coming in while we’re were there, which is impressive for a town of 350.
The pie was legit though. We were told it came from the pie shop across the street. Now THAT would qualify for the best food from a sketchy place. It looked like a meth house.
