Looking to do one of my AK’s. Would prefer someone with experience doing AK’s. Nothing fancy, just a solid color.

I follow this guy green dragon in Denham and his work looks excellent. Want to get my scorpion micro done one day soon. I think he only wanted like $200

Not in La but Birdsong just south of Jackson Mississippi does awesome work. They have basic colors to choose from . I had a gun done there 5 years ago and still looks perfect . My son hunts with it all the time . It’s not a safe queen.

I had a 1911 done at green dragon. Very dissatisfied. The slide came out great. The frame was horrible. Instantly started wearing off. I don’t think it was ceakote. Had to be some cheaper product. Some areas were very thick, others not. The frame was bronze and the slide black. Would not use again.

I had a Browning A-Bolt done there a few years ago. The only wear is on the bolt and the muzzle, but that is superficial, as the coating is in the metal. They don't just coat the exterior, but every part of the gun. There's a reason the 3 letter agencies and the special ops all have their guns done there and they are backed-up. But it's worth it.

Birdsong

One of the pioneers of protective metal coating finishes. I had work done by Birdsong in 1992 as they have a first class product and excellent people to do business with. I have nothing against the Cerakote finish but there are lots of businesses that opened up in the last several years and are now closed. The market is flooded with "Billy Bob's Custom Finishing" that do YETI cups, performance engine parts, rims, etc... Birdsong has done Government contract work for products used in the harshest conditions and isn't going anywhere.

I'll second Green Dragon. I've had Mark do several guns for me and they all came out great.

Blueline tactical in Livingston. Google or Facebook should pull him up.
He has done two rifles for me and I will send him another after the season. One of my guns has been coated for three years now gets used all season and off season for hogs and shows no wear at all.

They do awesome work. What sold me was when he showed me that they take the gun apart and completely coat every part. It’s not a rattle can airbrush finish that has all the pretty colors. It’s a durable coating that will last a long time. They don’t advertise because they don’t have to. I’ll be taking a couple guns there after season.

I don't know who does good work, I actually am not a fan of cerakote at all, but green dragon certainly does not do quality work.

I'd go with a traditional AK finish.

Would a cerakoting job and the sandblasting preparation likely take out a couple of very shallow pits in a blued rifle barrel?

Not trying to advocate for the Gus as I don’t know him but I wonder if he either didn’t sand blast it or did a “dry spray”.

Buy a can of the shite. Clean and prep then clean and prep again. Then follow instructions on can. Pretty simple. Doubt that an AK afacianado will know the difference.
