re: 300 blackout deer round
Posted by Bigsampson on 11/30/25 at 4:23 pm to Canvasback
I have a two ARs, 16 inch and 8 inch, and two contender barrels, 16 and 6 inches.
The AR barrels are threaded as is the 16 inch contender.
I built the 16 inch AR when my kids were young. Shot 110 grain vmac red and green tipped bullets and 200 grain SMKs. All super accurate.
We always used shot placement like a bow, behind the front shoulder. Always had pass through, great blood trails and destroyed lungs. Didn’t get flop and drops, but that wasn’t the goal. They never went more than 20 or 30 yards and were easy to find.
I shot a big doe with the contender and 200 grain smks loaded subsonic. Deer was about 75 yards, Bang,,,,, whack! Same end result. I think the internal damage was the bullet tumbling.
I have since acquired a Silencerco 46m to suppress them.
The ARs a quiet. Especially after tuning w adjustable gas. But the 16 inch contender is super, super quiet. Mostly just a thunk.
Hornady 190 grain subx loaded to about 980 fps is superb performer both terminally and noise wise.
May or may not function in your AR due to shape.

“Buy a shite ton of life insurance before you start.“
Firstly,
Make sure the insurance you have, or at purchase, covers you for private aviation accidents.
Most of them do not.
Flying is generally much safer than driving.
Be prepared to spend 10 to 14 k for a private. It’s not cheap. And you have to stay in practice. You have to commit one or two days a week to gain proficiency. If you take a few weeks off, most people need one or two warmup flights to get back on track. Staying proficient is what causes most would be pilots to drop out of training.

Terrible option for deer at 800 yards.
Because the bullet has little mass, it has less than 700 lbs of energy at 800. Terminal bullet performance would suck.
Nice steel ringer though.

Sorry,
338 win mag and many others retain enough energy to do the job at 800 yards.
You have to have a gun capable, favorable conditions and a person practiced with that firearm at those kinds of ranges.

Nosier 28 has about 1500 pounds of energy at 800 yards. Certainly enough gun.
A 6.5 creedmore has around 950, which is short of the generally agreed value of 1000 pounds for deer

Posted by Bigsampson on 11/17/25 at 10:21 pm to RouxDog91
Most of the time deer care less about dogs unless they are actually after them. I have seen dogs trailing deer run right past deer in a field. They just watch them. Sometimes bolt 15 or 20 yards, watch , then go back to feeding after they pass.
Same with strays. If the stray gets close, the deer move off. If it is within sight, but not a direct threat, they just watch them till they pass.
If they are strays, harassing deer, I understand the 3 s’s.

Typical hunting rounds like 308, 6.5, etc, typically do not retain enough energy for an ethical shot at that distance.
Need a big gun w lots of oomph.
That being said, right gun, right conditions and practice actually shooting those kind of ranges, I don’t have a problem if someone is competent. Most people never shoot past 2 or 300 yards, much less 700 or 800

I have a few, but for 300 bo, 308 I use a silencerco hybrid 46.
Can be direct thread or any of the standard connections.
Comes w a 45 cal end cap. You can buy an assortment of end caps from 223 up to 45.
So, you can shoot 45 pistols, 300 bo, 308, 338 lm, 45-70. Pretty much anything in between.
On a 45 pistol it is crazy quiet. I have a 300 Bo barrel on an encore and it’s nothing but a thunk.
It does very nicely on an ar in 300 Bo as well.
On a full house 308, it makes noise as expected, but heavily dampened.
It’s doesn’t affect poa and is a hoot to shoot. I have a 500 yard 8 inch plate at my place, it’s fun to ring unsuppressed. But suppressed is a hoot.

Personally, the 10/22 platform is the best. Lots of options for upgrades available as well.
My son has one of the Smith and Wesson AR 22s. I really like that one as well. Lots of parts are interchangeable w regular AR parts. That makes it nice.
I also have a regular AR w the 22 conversion kit. Changed the .223 barrel, which worked fine at closer ranges, for a 22 long rifle barrel. Very accurate and dependable shooter. A hoot with a suppressor just like a 10/22 is.

re: do you use a fuel stabilizer in your boat gas?
Posted by Bigsampson on 10/18/25 at 7:33 pm to cgrand
I can tell you what “might” happen if you don’t.
Several years ago I bought a fairly large offshore boat.
Bought it used, but had set up for a few years with 300 Gallons of regular fuel!
Started fine and ran at low rpm’s great. But, would bog down if you pushed it. Had a pair of 225 merc optimax w low hours on them. Compressions were great and just could not get it to jump onto plane like it should.
After several trips to the river I bought a 5 gallon external tank and ran one, then the other off the clean fuel. Bingo. Ran great.
Started a complete refit of all fuel lines, got rid of 300 gallons of bad gas and problem solved.
The gas in the tank looked like orange cool aid. I tried to burn some. It burned like diesel. No balls at all.
Worst part was in the lines. There was junk all built up in the lines. Looked like crushed up butterfinger. Not gummy, almost crunchy. It formed in the lines and then broke up and clogged low spots and bends.
What a mess.
After that I kept good treatment in it all the time. Worth every penny.
One tank of gas going bad on you is probably worth several years of treatment. Especially on an offshore boat.

re: What's your go to carry method working on the farm/land?
Posted by Bigsampson on 10/3/25 at 4:44 pm to Chad504boy
I either carry a Ruger Vaquero in 45 colt or an Sig 226.
The Ruger has a shot shell for first shot in the summer for rattle snakes. Carry in a high quality western style holster. 45 rounds are hot w 250 grain hollow points.
The Sig is in an outside the waist band kydex holster.
I find the belt holster and Ruger to be very comfortable around the ranch. Doesn’t interfere w much and has enough stopping power for anything I may encounter.
In the winter it holds 6 rounds of very heavy 45 colt rounds.
Sometimes I carry a 454 or 460 in a kenai holster when deer hunting. I could not imagine that as an every day carry gun or holster. Gets in the way when doing chores and moving around.

Look at the Panzer M4.
Turkish knockoff of Benelli m4.
Most of the parts interchange w actual Benelli parts.
I have several competition and hunting shotguns. Including Benellis. Shoots great and is solid quality. Big following. Facebook has a group.
For $450 bucks, can’t go wrong.

If you want something that is accurate:
Bergara
CZ
Exactly this.
I have both. Keep the suppressor on a bergara. Shoot turtle heads at 50 yards and coons under feeders at 100. Movie quiet.
Cci subsonic are the quietest and most accurate I have tried. Minute of turtle head at 50 yards is good enough for me:)

I started mine at 10 with a Matthew’s Mustang, an outstanding starter youth bow.
Your kid is big enough to skip the youth bow.
I would avoid the big box stores and go to a good bow shop. Much better customer service and ability to taylor the bow to your kid.

Personally,
I really like Sig.
Have a 226 Legion and a 226 Blackwater issued gun.
Superb firearms.
Have 2 1911s. Also superb.
And a tricked out Sig MPX that I compete with.
All run flawlessly and safely.
If they have a defective gun. It will be addressed. But, we n today’s blame game social medial feeding frenzy combined with a super litigious society, a gun maker is behind the 8 ball when they start.
We can’t afford to have a great gunmaker to be pileried and lost to us without due process.

re: New tires on the truck - want good looking mud tires but need good road tires…
Posted by Bigsampson on 7/22/25 at 3:36 pm to 3BlockUber
I have Nitto Ridge Grapplers on my F350.
Way better than wrangler at’s,
But I have had problems w delamination.
Of the original 4 tires I have had one or two a year delaminate in the tread causing crazy bouncing. They seem to last about a year and then go bad. Discount tire replaces them, and another $95 road hazard policy, and on the way again. But it is a pain to have to go there every 6 months or so to get a new tire or two.
I’m in Texas, so some fairly high speed highway miles. We do have a big fifth wheel, but it has been parked for 18 months or so.
Do not haul anything heavy, just Texas heat and highways.
Really like the tires, but going to swap out to something new.

re: Outboard motor, bad gas? How to fix?
Posted by Bigsampson on 6/14/25 at 1:50 pm to Meauxjeaux
Gas lines could be gummed up.
Take off engine and make sure you have free flow.
Put some gas in a clear container.
If it orange. Get rid of it all and flush lines.
Check fuel filters as well. They can hold water and gum up.
When you check the gas, try to get as much as you can from bottom of the tank. Check for water. You would be surprised how much water can get into your gas system over time.

Benadryl only is effective for swelling does nothing for necrosis.

I thought the vaccine was only for rattlesnake.
But, vet explained that it is for all rattle snakes, moccasins and copper heads.
It does not render a dog immune.
It gives you time to seek a vet and hopefully minimizes the effects of the bite.
You get two shots the first years, one booster a year after.
I have friends that have land out west where we are that have lots of experience w snake bites and swear by them.
In Fort Worth, the vets will hit you about 100 bucks for the shot. Country vets usually 30 or 40 bucks.
Between all the people that I know that have had the shot and our experience (could still have been a dry bite) we def will keep them up. 50 bucks for a vaccine or huuuge bucks for antivenom, and maybe reducing or eliminating crippling and disfiguring necrosis.
Easy choice.
