Looking for recommendations on buying a home around the New Orleans area. I'd like to be able to keep my boat at my house (I understand this isn't allowed in Jefferson and Orleans parish unless it can be parked in the back yard?).

Positives and negative to living in New Orleans, Metairie area, or places like Mandeville, Slidell, St Bernard Parish, St Charles Parish?

Really any info y'all have would be helpful!

Mandeville is way better. Just moved from Metairie, so happy to get out.

Anywhere other than Orleans Parish. Other than that it is a very broad question.

I lived in St Charles for 37 years. Live in BR now. Really miss being close to fishing like I used to do. Lots of good places there. Low crime and good schools too.

Quite a few nice neighborhoods on canals in Slidell, but they're all in a sub-optimal school district.

NOLA: Lots to do and places to go. shite schools. bad crime. bad streets. taxes. water bill.

Metaire: more house for your money (except OM), not much to do, less crime, traffic sucks

Mandeville: Pretty, more more house for your money, shite drive if you work in NOLA, good schools, pretty, less to do but getting better

Slidell: lot of house for money, meh

St. Bernard: lot of house for money. nothing to do. Yats errrrrwhere

St. Charles: ????

Look at the River Ridge area. Low crime, easy drive into the city. Lots of big yards for your boat.

Do yourself a favor and eliminate Orleans from the list. I live in Mid-City and have been a N.O. resident almost all my life with the exception of 3 years living outside Jackson, Miss.

I'm on my 3rd house and property taxes are getting to stupid levels, shite streets, high crime, auto insurance is nuts with so many others not having it but still driving around in beaters. I'm 68 and the wife is 62 and it costs us $3,300 a year and I'm only carrying liability on my vehicle and full coverage on the wife's car. If you have a teen, or soon to be teen and they start driving, prepareth thy butthole.

Where is your place of work, any school age children, how much are you looking to spend?

It will cost you an extra 5-10k a year to live in Orleans parish than any of the surrounding parishes. Not counting private school. Wasted money in my opinion.

You can make the boat at the house work in any of the surrounding parishes.

If you are young or social, stick close to the city. If settled, the further out the better. If you do not have to commute to the city 4 days a week, north shore becomes more attractive.

Side note: I noticed an unusually large number of active listings in Arabi the other day. Anybody know what’s going on in Arabi?

We just moved from Harahan to Luling. I would recommend both. Harahan is safe and quiet. With Earhart Expressway it’s 15 minutes to get downtown. Luling and St Charles parish have good public schools and you get more house and land for your money. We moved out here mainly for the schools. My in laws live in Houma and we wanted to be closer to them too.

In Jefferson Parish, it doesn't have to be in the back yard, but just behind the front line of the house. If you have a side driveway, carport, or even a wide enough side yard alongside the house, that is acceptable for a boat, RV or trailer.

This/\ I have a couple friends with boats that live in Metairie and they park them next to their house in the carport and are visible from the street and not behind the back yard fence.

I've seen the same thing in N.O. but I guess that all depends on the amount of "Karen's" in the neighborhood as to how long that will continue.

SCP—good public schools, decent value on housing, mostly functional local Govt. On the other hand, very limited retail and entertainment options. You are essentially moving to the country—no Thai food, no delivery food besides pizza, a handful of non chain sit down restaurants, very limited grocery shopping. You need to be OK with driving for most things; no SCP communities are walkable.

Local economy dominated by petrochemical multinational corps, so you can’t live here if you don’t like the occasional odd smell, gas flare, or if the thought of RoundUp freaks you out (it is manufactured in Luling).

I live in Kenner by the lake. Tons of people have boats out here and you get a lot more for your money than you do in Metairie, if you’re looking for the suburb lifestyle. It’s close enough to the city if you want to experience the Nola life but far enough away to avoid all the negative aspects.

It really depends on what you are interested in, and your tolerance for city life with its conveniences and headaches v the boredom/relative tranquility of suburban life. I've lived in the University section of Orleans, in Old Metairie, inside the loop in Houston, and now on the Orleans Lakefront. All had their pluses and minuses but for me, where I live now is perfect. There are other areas of Orleans where I'd be miserable, and I know I'd be miserable in Mandeville.

Neighbors temporarily keep boats in their driveway in my neighborhood all the time, though it's technically against the neighborhood restrictions. If permanently stored, it would have to be in a garage or behind a fence in the driveway behind the front of the house.
