The difference between cats and dogs

I’ll preface by saying I love both. Both have their own characteristics that are enjoyable as a pet owner and all that I’ve ever have had have been affectionate.
Currently I just have my GFs cat living with me. She’s been re homed because with multiple dogs around she just hides. So now she lives with me because right now I don’t have a dog.
Well one of my friends usually brings her dog when she visits. It’s a small dog. We keep them separated in different rooms with the door closed. One time we brought them in the same room but held onto the dog because the dog gets curious and the cat will swipe the shite out of it.
The biggest difference between these animals is while the dog is more outwardly friendly most of the time, it is far more dopey. When we brought them in the same room the dog was so focused on us and just having a ball that she was being held onto like a baby and had no idea a cat was lurking in the shadows with laser focus on the dog. The cat never blinked or broke focus. If it was up to the cat she would have killed the dog before the dog ever even noticed the cat was there. It’s fascinating to watch cats hunt and take advantage of their predatorial instincts and agility.

Cats get a lot of hate on here, but I love mine. I also love dogs but I travel a bit and don't have a fenced yard so it's not practical to get one.
My cat isn't a "typical" cat.. she's basically just like a small dog. Always by my side and asking for treats. Friendly to everyone.
On the other hand, my grandparents had a cat that lived to be about 16 and I swear to God in 16 years she only let 1-2 people even pet her. She was the meanest damn pussy I ever ran across.

Cats are self-sufficient and don’t require that constant needy attention that dogs do. And they’re cooler.

Says a lot that when trying to sell how cool a certain cat is people usually describe it as almost like a dog.

Two cats and one lab.
One cat is a typical cat.
My other cat is a petite 30 lbs and thinks he is a dog. Howls, plays fetch, and sits next to me watching TV.
At first it was a 3 way WWE fight more between the cats than the dog. Took 3 days to separate the cats in separate rooms, put food bowls at the door, so they get use to the smell of each other. After around 2 weeks it is all good until the cats go to the vet. Then it 3 days of kitty fights.
They seem to get along with the lab. At times they play and other times they all ignore each other.

I have a young cat and a dog. They both hound me for attention right now, but I'm assuming the cat will start to gain more independence as he gets older.

Well, it really depends on the breed of dog doesn't it?
All cats are the same. Dog breeds are very different across the board.
Put that cat in a room with a Gull Dong and see the difference..

This depends on the dog. My Aussie Shepherd, who was a notorious cat slayer, loves our inside cat since she tended to the cat when she was a kitten. My outdoor cat is a "dog swatter." He used to swat at the Aussie and miss, but one day he hit and I had to quickly intervene to save the cat. He no longer swats the dog.
My Aussie is a vigorous and focused patroller, and is far more intense than a cat. But, the cats do have more finesse at hunting.

Let the dog get a little beat up by the cat. They will learn quick and eventually become friends. Worst thing you can do is try to protect a pet from another. They will figure it out in their own time
