Is a Rolex a good store if value like fine art and historic cars or do they eventually go out of style and depreciate in value?

Some do go out of style but normally the Professional models become more valuable the older they get. Subs, GMT and Daytonas have historically been very good to exceptional in appreciation. That being said past performance does not equal blah blah blah.

Me too but at the early 80's prices (which were already stupid then). I have a receipt from when my Dad bought a Sub for less than $500 in the early 70s. Same watch. Same materials.

Without box and papers, he could probably sell it for 1,500-1,700

I might suggest your Invicta looks like the Rolex. But tomato-tomato.

Awesome. Like the new sub a lot better than the previous iteration. Glad they got rid of those awful lugs and think 41mm is perfect.

Really don’t like the double stick dial on the new OP. Like the size, though.

Sounds crazy to most but it might be a good time to snag one of these if you're an average Joe and want hard assets

Such work. Kudos. Yes, they've been fading for years. Very difficult to imagine a major turnaround.

May have to die, and be resuscitated, like Harley Davidson.

Then die again, like Harley Davidson, and wonder where we're at.

I really don't understand the appeal of these other than to say you have a Rolex

When you say “white gold”, is the case a chunk of solid white gold or is it plated stainless? The black dial blue bezel is a very nice looking watch.

If you can’t find a less expensive watch than those, I don’t know what to say. Try Amazon.

Slightly off topic, how much would you pay for this watch? Coworker has it and it's in mint condition. He's looking for the paperwork but thinks he bought it in the early 2000s. Roughly 43mm.

Looks like a 2531.80.00 it should be 41mm. My guess $2100 to $2500 with box and papers. That's the lower end of what most are listed at currently and on the high end for recent sales but that one looks very clean. It has a 1120 movement (modified ETA 2892) so it is rock solid. It predates the 33XX coaxial movements which become trickier to buy since the early versions had issues.

but what if I invest and actually use it (I.e. beat the shite out of it judging the condition of my one year old, chipped crystal, scratched to shite Seiko UFO)? Will the Rolex still appreciate?
