The new ceramic Kermit is killer. Would love to pick one up, but I'm sure the waitlist will be 5 years. I thought I would have liked to see an all stainless smurf, but the more I think about it, that just wouldn't be Rolex, simply because they do their own thing. They can see stainless sport watches with blue dials are all the rage, and they purposely went in a different direction. One of the many reasons they're my favorite brand.

I still love the case on my 16610 more than the super case and the newest release today. However, I like the newest case much better than the super case/maxi-dial. I don't love the move up to 41mm, but slimming down the lugs makes it much more visually appealing and would wear better on slimmer wrists.

All that being said, I'd be willing to bet that the 41mm is actually closer to 40mm--much like the Datejust 41 was closer to 39mm. I think this is a great compromise, and I would certainly love to add a Kermit to my collection.

Excited to see what Rolex has in store for the 50th anniversary of the Explorer I next year. Hope I can manage to add one of these to my collection as well.

I put my name on a “list” for a Sub a couple weeks ago. Guess I’ll never get one unless I go grey which I really don’t want to do.

I would NEVER suggest a watch even the most collectible ones and certainly not anything new as a true "investment". The market has serious volatility. If the economy goes to shite then you won't be getting a premium for watches except the uber rare watches the uber rich since their buying power loss in a bear economy just means they only buy one jet this year not 2.

Buy a watch because you love it. If you want to make money on watches buckle down learn the trade and do short term flips but for most people the juice isn't worth the squeeze.

What will appreciate more the two tone blue/gold or ss black?

The Black stainless over the two tone. The main reason is two tone goes in and out of style so the used market is a roller coaster. That said TT is making a comeback currently.

Fixed the lugs, even if they did go slightly bigger for the case dimension, It's a nice improvement in the proportions. I was hoping there would be a black dial LV version again some day. I may very well re-think my aversion to the super case subs now with that one. I have a six-digit GMT Master II, with the more aesthetic lugs, but rarely wear it in favor of a 16710 Pepsi.

I dig that silver dial OP w/ the gold hands and markers, but 39 mm was pretty much perfect for me in that watch. Good day for the Coronet overall for sure.

how much would you pay for this watch

I bought the Invicta that looks like the blue one with the silver band with a gold stripe. Cool watch..

I really don't understand the appeal of these other than to say you have a Rolex

Consider a hobby or an interest you might have. Then think of one model that has been the quintessential version of that item for roughly 70 years with a consistent evolutionary design that kept it as best in class basically that entire time. That is what the Sub is. A near-perfect analog is the Porsche 911. If you bought a 911 30 years ago and kept it it is cooler and worth more than you paid just like a Sub. We will forget the 996 ever happened.

Are there better watches than a Rolex, absolutely. However, they make a watch that you can wear 24/7 until the day you die whether you work in an office or you repair diesel marine engines (there is a story there, some may be familiar with it). Mechanical watches are a niche and ones that are the price of a Rolex are even a smaller niche. I wouldn't buy a Holland & Holland, Fabri, Greener or Purdey but I can understand why a man would if he appreciated the quality. I am just fine with a Bianchi. Someome else might be happy with a Revelation his dad or grandfather bought at Western Auto back in the day.

When you say “white gold”, is the case a chunk of solid white gold or is it plated stainless? The black dial blue bezel is a very nice looking watch.

All gold Rolexes are solid gold. The two-tone ones are solid where they are gold. Be aware watches carry a premium for precious metals, they cost difference between a PM watch and a SS watch that are otherwise the same far exceeds the cost of the metal. These are Veblen luxury goods and you pay a premium for the exclusivity of gold. The forming and finishing of a gold watch actually costs less since it is softer.

My Smurf (looks like the watch you are referencing but has both a blue dial and blue bezel) is 18k white gold and has the equivalent of roughly 2.5 troy ounces of gold total counting all the links. Currently that is just under $5,000 at spot price. The watch retailed for almost $30,000 more than the black steel version. That is a $25000 premium to own a white gold version that functionally is the same watch outside the color and metal.

Excuse the crappy cell pic I just took in crappy light with just a shirt tail wipe down. It at least should be clear I wear my watches...

I agree completely. As a watch enthusiast, you come to realize that even the slightest of changes in the Submariner--one of the most iconic watches of all time--is a really, really big deal. There's a reason the Sub is universally recognized. Every change it goes through adds to that 70-year history.

Even someone who doesn't get the appeal of watches should be able to see the value in that.

Thinking about selling my TT and going with a black ss because the gold scratches easily so I have an aftermarket band to limit that and it looks ok but not great. Bad idea? What black ss model would you go with?

I'm gonna say Pepsi GMTs and ceramic Daytonas rule the roost for SS Rolex. The Hulk and likely this new Kermit (whatever nickname it gets) are/will be very sought after but the black SS date and no date don't fetch much of a premium. Now the new ones will likely command a decent premium on the secondary market until the initial demand starts to be sated.

If you can get one from an AD, is it worth the time to flip it if you don't want it for a personal collection?
