However, this is not something new though. Apparently during the Spanish Flu, those who contracted outside the home and brought it into the home, had far fewer fatalities than those who contacted inside the home as the viral exposure is naturally much greater within families and within the home.

It won't totally stop the virus, but the virus is primarily spread through large droplets from sneezing, coughing, and talking. It will block those at least to a large degree.
You can argue that you won't cough, sneeze, or talk to people and that's fine, but on a population level people are nasty and will be sneezing, coughing, and talking. Yes the potential for spread is everywhere, which is where frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing becomes even more important.
The masks aren't an end-all be-all solution. They are part of a larger suite of preventative measures, each one kind of being like layers of Swiss cheese where fewest holes possible are lined up so spread is slowed. People are hung up on them and act like they're supposed to stop the virus all on their own, but that's never the design.

So it kinda works in ideal situations where the users are using it correctly. If you will read the CDC guidelines regarding cloth masks, they specifically state that they don't want the general public to use the M95 masks. Why? Because those actually work and they want them reserved for healthcare workers.
