Oh it was obvious why the CDC recommended AGAINST using masks in the beginning. There was a PPE shortage and they didn’t want people using up what the hospitals needed.

Now they are recommending cloth masks to simply make people feel better.

So when a doctor is performing surgery on you, do they wait until they're about to sew you back up to put on all PPE? That's the point I'm trying to make. I guess better late than never with the masks, right?

Because you know, when we were at the apex and the highest spike, the notion was "masks are not available right now, but if you have one wear it". Now, that we're on the downward trend the notion is, "you're a mouth breathing idiot if you don't have a mask on!"

Just seems kind of backwards to me. I don't know, maybe LUNCHBOX and Salmon are right. Maybe I'm an idiot for thinking that way?

Mask work when used properly. When not used properly, many are making things worse for themselves.

Quick, call him a contrarian for not agreeing with you

Don't get all hurt feelings about it now. Like I said, you enjoy playing the role of the prick. Wear it with pride.

But more tenacious, which makes for some fine entertainment.

Well at the time we were all supposed to be shut in our houses and not going anywhere, so masks wouldn't do as much, and they wanted to prevent a run on N95 masks which were already in short supply. I do get your point and think I agree somewhat, but it's really not a hill to die on.

Now that we're re-opening and people will be out and about more freely, masks do more for us as a preventative measure as we try to prevent the rapid spread we had initially.

By your same logic you're just a contrarian to me since we don't agree. That's dumb

Yes, because N95 masks work. Well, 95% of the time. They are also intended to be disposed of after single use... hospitals are working on ways to safely sanitize and reuse them. If a hospital worker wore the same N95 for weeks at a time, it wouldn't be nearly as effective either.

Homemade cloth masks... you're just wearing a germ rag. Unless you have multiple masks, change them out every time you touch your mask with a contaminated hand or go somewhere new, and then wash them all before reuse. I'd be surprised if 1% of the people out there are doing that properly.

I literally gave my opinion in my first post in this thread.

I’m anti masks for the healthy, but touching shite is not how this thing spreads. So touching doesn’t matter. Unless you are grabbing your tongue and then sticking your hand down someone’s throat they aren’t going to get sick from touching something after you.

Can't speak to everyone but we have a bunch of masks and don't re-use them without cleaning them.

And it depends on your goal.. nobody is claiming that cloth masks will prevent you from getting infected but they are supposed to help prevent spread via large droplets since that's the primary transmission mode of this virus. Will you touching the mask then touching other things spread the virus? Yes, but that seems to be less infectious for this virus than people coughing, sneezing, and breathing on each other.

I don’t care who wears a mask. I’m just trying to figure out why the recommendation of a mask for a respiratory virus causes all this backlash and then mental gymnastics to get to the theory that masks don’t work

If the CDC fricking lied about masks working to conserve masks for hospitals (widely accepted here) that should tell you all you need to know about their effectiveness.

that was about medical grade masks

nobody in the medical field is wearing a mask made out of an old t-shirt

No they really don’t. There’s a reason medical professionals are taught how to use PPE properly.

So is it ok if your surgeon doesn’t wear a surgical mask when operating on your open abdomen?

For the 1 millionth time...

They don’t stop you from getting infected

They do stop how much you spread the virus even when you are asymptomatic.

That’s why a surgeon wears a surgical mask when operating even if he isn’t coughing or sneezing. The act of breathing projects bacteria and viruses out of your mouth and nose. If you have a mask on most of it will be directed into the mask and not the surgical field, or in this case someone you are talking to very closely.

The problem is most people here don’t even have a basic understanding of germ theory

There is nothing magical about a “medical grade” surgical mask. It’s a cheap barrier meant for a single use. It doesn’t filter air.

N95s are different.

common sense tells me that if I'm not coughing, sneezing, or even talking to anyone, there is really no value in a mask

Sure masks do nothing. Firefighters, automotive painters, chem labs, pesticide and fumigation require respirators for their placebo effect.

And I'm sure Putin is wearing a hazmat suit and respirator so that he doesn't infect others
Seriously, are you that stupid?

Respirators and Hazmat suits are intended to protect the wearer.

I'm aware. But it is certainly a finer material and limits more particles from spreading.

Not to mention better fitting.
