SBMM: what's the big issue with this for you guys?

The Game Informer pod talked on this last week, and I've heard a lot of griping about SBMM (Skill Based Matchmaking for any scratching their head). I'm curious what everyone's complaint with it is. Is it the concept? Or does it just not work in your opinion? The general idea I agree with; if you are a high skilled player, that's who you are matched against, and it prevents low skill or new players to have to play against the top tier all the time and they can actually enjoy themselves. I can't see how people could have a problem with this, but I imagine there's other stuff behind the scenes that make it not so cut and dry.
ETA GI did mention that one gripe is it can slow down matchmaking, so I could see how that could be annoying.

I have no issues with it as long as you have a well thought out and implemented ranking system. In csgo I had more fun playing with people of my same shitty skill group than people better or worse than me. At least then when I ranked up it meant I was playing better if not actually getting better. Who thinks getting dunked on by people out of your league is fun?

i haven't noticed this really. it might be a hair longer but not a deal breaker by any stretch.
i kinda don't like it because if you suck it doesn't give you any incentive to get better. if it bothers you that much just leave the lobby and find another one.
not really a fan though

The higher you get in SBMM, the sweatier and shittier it gets.
Most people don't want to deal with these kind of lobbies and want to just have fun playing in non-comp lobbies

It's just the worst.
There are a number of issues with it.
The main thing is matchmaking for casual playlist should always prioritize connections. Once you start reaching out farther and farther to reach your skill based requirements this is jeopardized. You don't get the best connection period.
For some games, yes, you will take longer to connect to lobbies. It is not always an issue though.
Another big gripe I personally have with it, is how it effects groups. If you are a casual player and you group with a higher skill friend, you will have a tough time. Instead of the lobby being random and casual as it should be. This causes friends not to even want to play with certain friends.
The systems are easy to reverse boost. Lots of artificial most kill games/nukes are out there because of this.
If you are highly skilled you have to sweat every game and that is frustrating. It's fun to do well in a game that you learned to play, instead of just playing the next wall.
Less improvement for new players as they are basically playing another game.
But it is here to stay. The lower skill bracket of players is what makes them more money because of sheer numbers. And by protecting those players, they retain more of them. More players is more money.
Also a note: Lots of players won't even notice the connection issues or lobby times because the lower skill lobbies are a bigger player pool. It's when you are really good that you will start noticing cross country players or even across ocean players. This is an obvious reason as to why Activision is forcing crossplay on xbox and PC. They need a bigger playerbase to make their system work.

Never happens. And if it does or has....it took far to many shots to be cool enough to clip.

It's a video game. We shouldn't have to protect players from themselves. As another poster has said if it is done in a ranked playlist of some sort, that is fine.

Another unintended issue with Warzone PC.
That game has a horrible anti cheat.
Cheaters end up getting matched with higher skilled players.
Streamers are getting cheaters almost every game because of this.
It is a big issue right now.

It's about making sure a certain demo has fun and doesn't want to quit playing your game. Why games like CS:GO, Overwatch, and RS Seige have an almost nonexistent entry point.
But I agree, keep it out of the casual list. But in that sense, you need to rename it from "Ranked Matches" to something else because to me all that always implied the elite players, not "you are going to be evenly matched".

Pretty similar issue with Destiny 2 right now. It is fine to have SBMM in competitive modes. I still don't necessarily like it, but that is fine.
In casual game modes, anything other than connection based is just dumb.

Just remembered that Xbox is forced to play with PC, so you are screwed on the box too if you are great. Unless they can fix this cheater problem.

My biggest issue with SBMM is when it doesn't synchronize with the ranked system in the game.
For example: In LoL back in the day, I was a low Platinum player but I was constantly playing against high Diamond players and having issues ranking up.

Screws mixed skill groups.
Why have it when you can have ranked?
People stay because of content update not getting crushed. Fortnite didn't have sbmm for a very long time. The games were even and you could just have fun and if you wanted to play harder people, you just go to arena.
Better players just want to relax some games.

How much do you know about this topic?
All 3 of those games have a SBMM system.

I'm running in to this issue now with Fortnite. Two of us are pretty decent but when we run squads, my casual friends get absolutely dominated because they are forced to play in our lobbies.
This season it has been tough to come by wins, everyone is just sweating final zones even in public matches

People hate it because it messes with their self esteem

Is that what we should be doing? Boosting self esteems?
