The skinny from his report in the New England Journal of Medicine:

- 80% of COVID-19 cases have minor/no symptoms

- 20% (or less) have symptoms/test positive

- US case fatality rate now = 1.4% (deaths/confirmed cases)

- Implies US total FR = 20% x CFR or 0.28%

- US flu TFR (CDC stat) = 0.14%

- COVID-19 TFR = 2x regular flu

1) that still isn’t great and mean this is nothing to worry about since it’s not like we all got annual covid shots this year

2) we been over this too many times to count, but this isn’t the problem. The problem is being unable to get the treatment you need because of the quick spread of the virus and number of cases.

Can we just not downplay this so we can all take it seriously, get this under control, and go about our lives sooner?

He says "may be" and it's based upon assumptions.

It's still too early to know with certainty.

So After closing down everything, we are battling a bad case of the flu? Sounds better than going on with business as usual and having those numbers jump.

The argument is about to shift how this would be so much worse if we did nothing.

And yes, there is merit to that argument.

There is merit to giving everyone $60k base income will make their living conditions better.

Neither one of those statements factor in the longterm consequences.

This can’t be right. Most of the people on this board just will not survive this pandemic apocalypse. We are all doomed.... doomed I tell you.

Based on the tracker your numbers are a little high still.

14% of those tested are infected, Mike Pence even announced this in the conference last night. NY is a little higher closer to 23% but most other states are closer to 8%.

Also the flu stats are measured by expected cases and deaths. Corona is actually measuring by hard stats right now which makes it seem more lethal. If anything this is less infectious and lethal than the flu.

It goes back to the "if we handle this right it'll seem like an overreaction" line of thought.

We don't know just how bad it could be if we didn't take these measures. If s healthcare system gets overwhelmed the number of deaths skyrockets, as we saw in Italy. If we keep the healthcare system treading water then the CFR will be substantially lower.

That's not what it says. Again, as others have said, the problem is that this spreads more widely than than the flu

That's not what it says. Again, as others have said, the problem is that this spreads more widely than than the flu and can more easily overwhelm hospitals. That can lead to unnecessary deaths.
