GM stops paying for health insurance for striking union workers

General Motors Co shifted health insurance costs for its striking workers to the United Auto Workers union as its members walked the picket line for the second day on Tuesday.
The UAW on Monday launched the first company-wide strike at GM in 12 years, saying negotiations toward a new national agreement covering about 48,000 hourly workers had hit an impasse.

Meanwhile, GM said coverage for the striking workers' health insurance reverted to the union, which unsuccessfully sought to have the No. 1 U.S. automaker cover those costs through the end of the month. That places another drain on the union's strike fund. "We understand strikes are difficult and disruptive to families," GM spokesman Jim Cain said in an email. "While on strike, some benefits shift to being funded by the union's strike fund, and in this case hourly employees are eligible for union-paid COBRA so their health care benefits can continue."
The Union apparently told their members that the company would continue covering them, which apparently isn’t the case.
If you don’t work, do you still get paid?

Bravo, GM. Didn’t think you had the balls to do this.

Ford and Chrysler should kick them all out on principle too. Treat UAW leadership like the leaches that they are.

Price of a 2500HD just dropped a grand. Imagine how much health insurance costs to take care of glutinous union workers?

It looks like GM finally realized the workers are there for the jobs, not that GM is creating jobs just to employ workers.

Slowly start hiring non-union replacement workers one by one. Phase the leeches out slowly and painfully. Watch production increase and overhead decrease. Profit.

The UAW is going to be in tough shape if this lasts more than 30 days with this strike. It could completely blow up unions across the US.

Ole Bernie is going to have a stroke at this news
Well done GM

Wasn’t this strike supposed to be a shot across the bow at Ford, whose negotiations are coming up next?
I don’t think this will work out the way they thought.
