When I lived in Alaska back in the mid-80s a high school friend of mine moved to live with relatives he had in West Virginia. They bought him Greyhound tickets all the way from Alaska to West Virginia. They sent him his tickets and it was a stack like 2” thick and the trip was going to take him like close to two weeks.

My car broke down in college and I had to take one from BR to Shreveport. It took 6 hours and there were several strange characters I encountered along the way.

Bought some great pot in Memphis from some people on the way to Seattle.
I got off the bus in Odessa,Tx. I don't think they were half the way there. I was through with riding busses.

Rode MegaBus, but never Greyhound.

I rode on one twice in 2016. They really aren’t bad, but the clientele is a bit suspect. One guy sitting near me had just got out of jail and had a trash bad with a few things in it. I let him use my phone so he could call ‘his people’ and let them know he was about ‘to touchdown’.
I’m not a hypocrite and I was on a bus too so I didn’t judge.

I rode Greyhound several times in my youth. There was nothing express about any Greyhound express route. If a trip would take me 6 hours in my car, it would take them 12 hours because of all the stops. There's also something disturbing about a drug dog sniffing the bus interior before we could get off. Word to the wise - if someone on the bus asks you to hold their bag for a sec, don't do it.

Same. I took a rountrip on Greyhound from NYC to Shreveport at Christmas in 96. The buses were packed, it was a very long trip. 3 days felt like two weeks.

Used to take the Chinatown bus that runs between the Chinatowns of DC, Philly, and New York. 20 bucks.

I rode a few times as a kid in the 60s too. If I recall the buses were cleaner and so were the passengers. I think it was actually a safe and acceptable form of transport.

I’ve ridden Megabus to Houston.
Due to my Dad's and then Mom's failing health, I had a need to be back and forth from Houston almost monthly during a good swath of 2015-2018. I kept a car at my Mom's in Baton Rouge and I took (mostly) MegaBus and (sometimes) Greyhound a couple dozen times I think.
I chose not to drive it, for a number of reasons. There were a couple downsides, but here's the upsides:
- free (and decent to good) WiFi so I was able to work my sales job (and post on the O-T) for the duration
- the trip by car tends to take 4.5 hours. By bus, as little as 5.0 to 5.5 hours (so not that bad)
- met some interesting folks along the way, including a kid playing Div II basketball heading home for Thanksgiving.
- no stress AT ALL from a-hole, slow, dangerous drivers
- when there was a delay on I-10.. no worries.. just got more work done
- 75% of the time the seat next to me was empty
ETA
- on a nasty, rainy day, it is nice to NOT be gripping the steering wheel for dear life... ok but yea, also hoping the bus driver (and bus) is in good condition as well. But statistically, and by miles driven, those busses are safe as shite.

Once in college I caught a ride to Dallas to watch a Saints/Cowboys game with my LSU room mate who happened to be from Dallas.
That following Monday I got on a grey hound where President Kennedy was shot in Dallas. So that was kind of cool.
What wasn't cool was that it took Hwy 80 most of the time and it stopped in Canton, Tyler, Longview and Waskom before getting to Shreveport. Needless to say, it took about 8 hours for what a normal car ride would be 3 hours.
It was cheap though...
Never rode one again.

You chose the wrong bus. Knowing the Houston to Baton Rouge route pretty well, I can tell you there is an express bus that stops either 0 times or 1 time (Lake Charles) and also one that stops 3 or 4 times.
I suspect they offer an express route from Dallas to Shreveport too.

I had to get a vehicle from N Louisiana to DFW last year so I rode one, first time ever.
It wasn't bad, I watched Netflix all the way.
Took 6+ hours for a trip which usually takes 4

I've never taken a bus or train. Other than school charter trips.

No Greyhound. Took Mega Bus RT from Houston to NOLA. Not a bad deal, left real late in Houston and thought I would sleep the whole way to NOLA. Wrong. someone listening to Cupid Shuffle on repeat, girls talking loud on cell phones, ect.
Glad I did it for the experience but thats about it.
