Got a friend that rides them today because he is scared to fly. He says it is not too bad---likes it better than Amtrak actually.

I rode Continental Trailways on a couple of trips as a kid---back in the sixties.

When I left to go in the army they sent us to reception on the Trailways bus to the airport. Then we flew TWA to St Louis, MO.

I've never been on a Greyhound. My mil rides Amtrak from Birmingham to Nola every time she comes to visit. She scared of flying and doesn't want to drive it either.

And your student ID was free use of CATS. Also pretty cool.

When I was in college I used to travel on holiday weekends to somewhere new. Not overall bad it’s just a car ride. But it takes forever to get anywhere, like 3 times what you could driving yourself and you end up tired from the trip.

I knew a guy in undergrad that worked for them in their office. He got free rides anywhere anytime so he rode them all over the nation. He’d talk about the hundred different connections, spending an hour in this downtown station, half a night in another, and whatnot ... even in college all that crap didn’t seem worth it.

But it didn’t phase him and he went somewhere every holiday.

Took one from Baton Rouge to Yellowstone. Twice. Craziest experience of my life. I was 18 and alone and saw-

-A retarded woman have her period all over herself.
-Two gay dudes having sex in the Denver terminal bathroom.
-A passenger steal another passenger's Subway sandwich. (When someone ratted on the thief the victim sucker punched him for it and both were kicked off the bus.)

I had too many vehicles at the farm and not enough locally so I decided to take the bus from Shreveport and then bring a car back. The bus was modern and clean.

It is not the bus - it is the passengers that you have to associate with when you ride.

The dregs of society ride Greyhound and the bus stations are generally horrible.

One college age girl was on the bus I rode - she sat right behind the driver LOL (and I don't blame her).

When I was in the Army and just before I got a car, I used to ride the Greyhound from Fort Polk to BR when I'd go home on a four day pass. Also rode on one from Hammond to Chicago with my mom when I was a kid when we moved there.

Buddy of mine's wife is a flight attendant (no pics, she's not that great looking.) Technically, family members can fly free, but they put so many restrictions on it it's usually not worth it.

I got in a wreck in a company van in Corpus Christi and had to take a Greyhound back to Baton Rouge. It was horrible and I hope I never need to ride one again.

In college in the mid 2000s I took it from Nashville to Montgomery one time with a stop in Bham. It was like a 30 minute stop and they somehow had overcapacity and I was the last one to get a seat in Bham after having plenty of room from Nashville. No clue how that happened, I was about to be pissed.

The people that ride the Greyhound are those that basically can’t afford to rent a car. Or have a friend that can drive them. Or use anything else but the last possible way to get there. If you don’t book your ticket pretty well in advance it’s actually not that cheap. Like $50 from Bham to Montgomery, more than renting a car for sure but not with one way fees I guess.

Eta: oh yeah here’s another crappy thing about them, they don’t have overnight parking. Like any of them. When I rode it I left my car at the Montgomery airport which I guess had free parking at the time. Then had to taxi a mile or 3.
