Oh yeah!! No chance your employer will catch this.
quote:

Whiddon was hired in August as a manager in training at a salary of $550 a week, but he was later demoted to a regular employee. However, he continued to clock in under “person in charge” and the system paid him $550 an hour.

quote:

Checks as high as $15,673 were discovered, according to court records, but he never disclosed the over payment. In the seven months he worked at the shop, Whiddon took home $68,869, more than five times the federal individual poverty level of $12,140.

Holy crap!!! Pretty sorry too that it took so long to be noticed by management.

Here’s the icing on the cake.
quote:

The manager of the store agreed not to press criminal charges if Whiddon paid half of the money back. When questioned, however, he said he had already spent the money and was unable to make payments.

What a fricking dumbass!!

The six months part isn’t in the story but was reported that way on local radio.

We had a payroll clerk that accidentally entered a $1.00 raise as $10.00 raise. When I caught the error months later and brought it the employees attention he quit. Legal Dept said we had to eat the overpayment.

Sounds like someone in payroll should go to jail with him. There is no way nobody didn't notice this for 6 months.

He could have invested it, then been able to pay back the error and keep the interest.

This happened at my old company. Some lady at the factory was making $75/hr instead of $7.50. It was a simple decimal error.

It went on for 6 months. She was fired but not asked to pay anything back. Apparently an attorney she retained immediately afterwards said the right things.

Her supervisors said she was a model employee during that time. Always punctual and productive, and eager to work OT.
I think she scammed somewhere in the neighborhood of $60K during that time.

His mom's not happy

quote:

Tallahassee Police officers allowed Whiddon to call his mother from the back of their cruiser. He told her he’d spent the money on car payments, rent, guitars and amps which she rebuffed saying she paid his car note.

These errors happen by normal computer errors.

But they are not “caught” quickly because most employees don’t really care about their job. They only care about getting their work done between social media postings and internet browsing.

If that was a small business where the boss wrote his own payroll - it would have been caught week #1.

Sounds to me like this guy stumbled into a money laundering scheme, and it took them six months to realize they were paying the wrong “person in charge.” Kind of like that movie Blank Check.

So dude would’ve still gotten to pocket $275/hr for 6 months.

Sweet deal. Too bad he’s a dumbass.

Money laundering. What sammich shop doesn’t notice this for six month? Don’t care how many locations or stores you have.
