Well, I guess it was shortly after 1 o’clock, so not technically evening. Sure seemed like evening in school though.

We got to spend 20 minutes outside after lunch in middle school. Not sure I'd consider that recess though.

No more recess and it sucks for the kids. My daughter timed it, by the time she got her food she had 8 minutes to eat. That's not nearly enough time. Kids need more time to burn off energy.

It’s a shame and the reason half these kids are “diagnosed” with ADD and ADHD. They are forced to sit in a classroom for 8 hours a day with no breaks other than lunch. Then they go home and sit behind a computer all night. These kids need to run around for a while and wear themselves out but the school system doesn’t let them.

We had "lunch" that I guess was around 45 minutes or so, after you ate you could leave the cafeteria and hangout in the "commons" which was this cement courtyard with a few vending machines and benches.

ETA: I want to say that I had PE every grade until sophomore year.

Had recess through 8th grade i believe. But most of me and my classmates stopped "playing" by 6th / 7th grade and it was more of a "break" in that we would just hang out and shoot the breeze.

Had PE every day I think.

Graduated 8th grade in ‘94 and we had two recesses every day. Had a 15 min recess between 2nd and 3rd period and then a 30 min recess after lunch between 5th and 6th period.

I was pretty shocked when I looked at my 3rd graders schedule and saw that their TOTAL time for lunch and recess was 35 minutes. They get 20 minutes for lunch and 15 mins for recess. My wife and I were both pretty shocked when we saw that.

One of my kids started 6th grade this year, and apparently there's no recess. When they finish their lunch, they just sort of hang out in the cafeteria.

probably best. they end up fighting and stabbing each other at that age anyways w/ school yard recess.

My eldest is going to K next week. Went to the playground for a meet the teacher type activity and saw the 4 square ..... court? squares? Anyway. Those frickers were tiny. I’ve been trying to figure out if that’s just my mind playing tricks on me after 25 years or if theres is truly smaller than what we grew up with.

I remember PE back at Sherwood Middle back in 1980. We played football, kickball, had a shotput event. We did long jumps and triple long jumps. Went inside for Winter and our class did high jumps and basketball.

Two weeks out of the year, we had health classes. Not sure what these kids are doing today.

Recesses have been cut back in all grades. It’s a damn shame.

Why?

Could this be the reason so many kids are "ADD"? They need time to get some of their energy out, I would think..

If I recall, in high school, we had two recesses. I think you went to 3 classes, then there was like a 10 min recess. There were two different lunch/recess shifts. So I guess.. I think after 4 hr, the people on the first lunch schedule would go to lunch. You had the option to go eat in the cafeteria or not eat or bring your lunch and eat outside. We might of had a vending machine where some people would get something out of there to eat for lunch (peanut butter crackers, etc).. But even if you at in the cafeteria, you had enough time to go and hang out with everyone.

I am not sure of the hrs, but I think if the first lunch was after 4th hr then that group went to 5th, 6th hr.. Or maybe 7th hr (either 6 or 7) and those on the other shift would go after I guess 5th hour then went to the last 1 or 2 classes of the day.

For some reason, I think everyone was required to take PE in 9th and 10th grade. And in 11th and 12th it could have been an elective. At PE, depending on what coach people had, most of the time people would play basketball or dodgeball, the people who didn't want to do either. Some coaches made them walk up and down the bleachers, some coaches would make them walk around the court or if the weather was good, they would have to go to the track. Some coaches would just say for them to do something and then really didn't care what they did, as long as they were dressed out.

But how the hell do kids spend all day in classes with no time to burn some energy or socialize?

Middle school for me started at 7th grade and ran through 8th. We didn't have recess in those grades.

Last grade I had recess was 6th.

Kids aren't fat asses because of no recess. They are just lazy or their shite parents don't monitor what they eat.

No more recess and 3 year olds now have "homework". The world has gone wacky.
