I am 56 so nearing the payoff after paying in and I agree this needs to happen. I have been reading about the trainwreck that is coming my entire adult life.

Only a matter of when, needed adjustment for age all along, should be about 73 by now if it had been incrementally increased all along

I do not know what to do about it now though. There is no way to do what is needed and remain politically viable.

The country will be demogogued into oblivion eventually because a rational debate on it is impossible.

If we want welfare cuts, I just want it to be ALL welfare.

No more food stamps? Okay, mo more farm aid.

Public Transportation cuts? Okay, no more gifts of 1 Billion dollar statiums to NFL owners.

No more help for poor kids with their student loans? Okay no more grants to companies to help them do research? If the poor can't experiment and learn in school, then we won't let tax dollars do that for Fortune 500 companies.

I think a very simple way to reform social security is to get rid of it insofar as a forced contribution and allow deferred compensation plans for anyone and basically gut the whole system. If you work and pay in, this would be a better method to ensure that money is in your retirement program anyway. If you don’t pay in, you don’t get the money, but either way the government shouldn’t have their hand in any of this. Of course it’s built to give something to the have nots, and this has caused it to balloon completely out of control. If it is truly designed as a retirement supplement, I don’t know how politicians can argue with the money going to independent retirement plans. Unfortunately this will never happen.

slow your roll there little marco, soc sec isnt welfare and it needs to be increased NOT cut. senior citizens live on below minimum wage earnings as it is now and hasnt had any "real" cost of living adjustment for the last 10 years. most people dont even realize in the last 10 years soc sec recipients have gotten a whopping 3.7% increase in benefits?
that averages out 0.3% COL increase a year and who here things prices on things you need to live havent gone up in the last 10 years? my aunt is barely making it on $900 a month soc sec check and cant even afford to buy meat or running the a/c in summer
