Is Highland Park, TX basically what St. George is trying to do?

I always thought it was odd how Highland Park is it's own city basically within the city of Dallas, but reading all this St. George stuff I guess I see why. 100 years ago they did what St. George is trying to do, they incorporated and became a city. Their property tax spiked keeping people who aren't wealthy out, now they get their own public school that is basically a top private school in Dallas when it comes to quality of education.
What really solidified Highland Park though is when they built Highland Park Village, which I believe was the first large scale outdoor shopping center in the US (think Perkins Row but nicer). Now it is essentially the nicest neighborhood in Dallas with the nicest houses, except they pay their own taxes, have their own city council, and their own school. It's a pretty sweet set up if you can afford to live there

No, if St. George is as successful as it hopes to be, it will be the equivalent of Central.

From what I read, Highland Park petitioned Dallas to be annexed, but Dallas refused. Then, Highland Park incorporated. Then some years later, Dallas tried to annex Highland Park, but Highland Park refused.
I'd say that it has worked out well for Highland Park.

While Highland Park has great schools....there's ton of great public schools around the greater Houston/Dallas area because we don't bus kids all over. If Baton Rouge actually had neighborhood schools I think they'd see improvement in some areas as time went on.

They are going to have to try a lot harder.

the founders said they were inspired by Sandy Springs, GA. The city basically separated from Atlanta and all of their government services except police/fire is ran by a private contractor called CH2MHill. Since Baton Rouge doesn't have nearly the wealth of Atlanta or Dallas, I doubt it would be like Sandy Springs or Highland Park.

Doesn't George W. Bush live nearby in Preston Hollow?
That should tell you a lot about the affluence of the area.

You have seriously got to be kidding me.

It was all about schools until the state legislatures blocked any attempt at that twice. St George is an alternative plan in order to get the school district but as that would stop City of Baton Rouge from robbing us City of Baton Rouge has done all they can to make it about money.

I've always heard that they tried to get Dallas to annex them and they said no, so they said ef it and incorporated themselves. Dallas regretted that decision and then tried to annex them later and HP told them to eat shite.
It really is an awesome neighborhood. I live a couple blocks away from the border in Oak Lawn. I run around Armstrong Pkwy almost everyday dreaming about my future house.

St. George won't be able to sniff highland parks crotch. Might be the same idea, but Baton Rouge doesn't have the wealth to support an area like highland park. Similar situations in Houston with Piney Point, Hedwig Village, and Bunker Hill Village.

Look at the Villages of Houston (Hedwig Village, Bunker Hill, Spring Valley, etc.). Same concept as to what St George is trying to do (I think). They operate autonomously of Houston.

One thing that hasn't been pointed out here that I believe is very important in these successful TX neighborhood schools is the tax structure.
In Louisiana, there is a state income tax. Off the bat, you're sending 4-6 percent of your income (after a certain dollar about) to Baton Rouge. From there, the dollars are redistributed into funding of public school. Yes, there is local property tax in LA for schools too, but those are extremely low comparatively.
In TX, no state income tax but significantly higher property taxes. These tax dollars remain local, funded by people in the local communities, for their schools, parks, etc.
I believe that different structure plays a factor in what you see with the great local, community schools in places like Houston and Dallas, and their outlying suburbs.
TX also does not determine school districts strictly by county lines. There are independent school districts all over the place.

uhh no, having SMU and Dallas close by to leech off of for years and years is what solidified them. Where do you think most people from HP work?

The topic of this thread reveals the true intent of the st george backers. Greed. Never about schools. Really, they think they will become a Highland Park or Westchester County, NY? Please. It would be laughable if it werent so sad. Ooh maybe they will be like CCLA.
Again, all in BR care about schools but most would rather work towards it in the spirit of unity rather than on the backs of all tax payers in the parish.
