There are plenty of skilled labor jobs (i.e. welder) that one can make a good living off of. The mantra that everyone has to go to college needs to die, quick.

The market will correct this, when in 10-15 years the vast majority of skilled tradesmen retire and demand for their services begin to rise. With such scarcity and high demand, the logical conclusion is a hefty increase the price demanded for the trade.

Btw, master plumbers can make over six figures.

I've made more money trucking in the oilfield than I ever did as a speech writer or PR consultant.
Of course, there are many many many shortcomings to this practice.

College isn't a necessity. Intelligence and drive are... What are his plans besides not going to college?
Lots of work in LA for people without college degrees that have intelligence and drive.

Some places are already starting to see this. Skilled workers (who can pass a drug test and background check) are getting harder and harder to find.

Not everyone is supposed to go to college. It wouldn't work if everyone did. There are plenty of skill jobs you can take up, or if you are fairly intelligent you can become an entrepreneur and build your own business.

Sounds like he should enlist in the military.

The market should be correcting now, but it's not. Demand for skilled labor (at least in Louisiana) has never been higher. However, the labor pool is smaller than it's been in decades. The bottom line is that there aren't enough kids enrolling in votech programs. I blame our high schools and our culture which look down on working with your hands. High schools tend to try to prepare and convince everyone that they need to go to college. The bottom line is, they don't and they shouldn't.

Bill Gates and Steve Jobs both dropped out of college. Richard Branson never attended at all.
Does that answer your question?

Partying takes money. If your parents don't bankroll you with enough money to party (mine didn't)
This. My parents helped me out at certain times (like they are now in my final semester where I'm required to have a job that does not pay on top of the job I already have), but they DO NOT give me some kind of allowance. They are helping me with my rent because I am struggling.
I always have and still do work during all of my free time in order to pay my rent/electricity/gas/food/internet/water/trash/sewer/etc.
Don't get me wrong.. I still live a fairly nocturnal lifestyle that won't be likely once I graduate.. but it has not been 4 years of nonstop partying. I've always had to have a job, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that I'll enjoy working without also going to school more than I do doing both.
The time I took off from college and just worked was infinitely better.
I don't regret going to college. I love it. I've learned a lot, both academically and about myself. But some people aren't cut out for it, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that.

Literally everyone from LP gets a trade in one of those fields. A shortage in LA will not happen. Ever.

he can make a living without a degree and not in the blue collar world, but it's much harder and within 10 years, he'll be wishing he went to school

If you don't make him go go to college you are a horrible horrible parent

Do what my grandparents did for my brother. Get a degree and you get inheritance. Don't get a degree and you get nothing.

edit: A trade is worth way more than half of the degrees out there.

I hate to break it to you, but the shortage is now. Louisiana needs twice as many tradesman as it has and they all need to be able to pass a drug test.
If you aren't afraid to work with your hands and can show up to work and pass a drug test, you can start at $15/hr working 6 10s as a helper. If you agree to go to trade school, you can be up to 20-30/hr in just a few years. Sure, you'll work shitty hours, but you can quit your job and take off for a few months whenever you want and then always have a job waiting for you when you want to work.
