seriously if I wasn't going to go to school I would learn how to become a damn good carpenter. go work for a custom cabinet shop for 2-3 years and soak up everything I could…then I would start my own custom cabinet business. if you do excellent work, you can make shite loads of money at that if you are in the good neighborhoods

Sure he can, there are lots of jobs(especially in South LA) that he can do without a degree and make a good living. My only brother that didn't go to college makes more than me or the other one that finished.

What kind of oil and gas connections do you have?

Too many people use college as a trade school these days anyway

Too much emphasis these days on going to college and getting a degree. It's not necessarily needed. Just look at this place and all of the people with "I have a degree in ____, how can I get into O&G?" or of the like. I have a stack of applications and resume's on my desk and many have impressive degrees from prestigious schools and they'll never even get an interview.

I will agree with this.

This country has lost craftsmen. When the older electricians, carpenters, mechanics, welders start retiring/dying off, this country is going to be hurting.

He needs to figure what he wants to do. Some career paths require college, some don't. Just saying "I don't want to go to college" is dumb.

My Dad owned his own cabinet/carpentry shop. I was amazed at how much he charged people for a custom table that he could make in 2 hours

He is not sure what he wants to do but knows he doesnt want to do more studying, paper writing and tests right now. Hence the not wanting to go to college.

Thats the problem with american so many kids feel entitled to go to college. In the UK or Europe lots of people don't go b/c early on its clear they are not cut out for it. They are put on the career path to learn a trade of some sort.

So you see lots of young people making a living doing lots of jobs their american counterparts the same age would never think about doing.

I heard a joke about when the attorney got the bill from his plumber.

Attorney: $300 an hour???? I can't even charge my clients that!!!!

Plumber: I couldn't either when I was practicing law, that's why I'm doing this

Not getting paid for two hours. Getting paid for knowing what to do in those two hours.

he can go offshore like I did. 17 years later, i'm doing pretty well. however, I've had to sacrifice missing half of my kids' lives.

for real. my uncle owned a custom cabinet shop after he retired and he made a killing doing high end new kitchens and living rooms for rich people. dude was a great craftsman and sold the business when he got too old. he never paid $0.1 for advertising…all of the business was word of mouth and he was always backed up 3-5 weeks.

He's a kid, kids are goofy.

Mine is the same way, but thankfully he wants to go to college. Not sure if it's to study or party?

same for my Dad

added benefit is that you will never have to pay someone to do any remodeling

my Dad used our house as his "showroom", so we had a new kitchen every 3 years

ETA: I was never interested in learning the trade when I was younger. I really regret that now as an adult.

At least he won't waste money studying for a profession he isn't sure he likes yet. Taking time, working, figuring out what you want to do in life and then going to school to pursue that career doesn't seem like too bad of an idea.

Of course, but he needs to learn a skill or trade.

I'm 33, only finished a semester of college and haven't made under 6 figures in the last 10 years. That being said, work ethic is a must.

Also, I am now 1 semester away from having a degree from an online college. I've done this whole thing while working.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with going to work. And you can still get a degree later.

Of course he can, but it'll help if he is sure of what he wants to do and knows what it's going to require. Get him an internship so he can see for himself.

I'm glad I've got my degree, but it hurts to write that $400 check to salliemae every month.
