Question about young women's style choices now vs. 30-40 years ago

I've noticed that young women (say, under 25) nowadays tend to really aggressively try to put together some kind of overall "look" or "style." Like, they'll dye their hair a certain color and then dress in complementary colors, or accessorize with tiny little backpacks or hats (not ball caps). Some of them wear little chokers, ankle bracelets, and the like.
All that's fine, but it occurred to me recently that I don't remember things being that way when I was a teenager / young adult. I remember that women tended to just wear jeans, tennis shoes, and a polo shirt like guys did, just more feminine versions. Maybe they'd wear a halter top or a skirt sometimes, and of course formal wear is a totally different ballgame, but this notion of having a "personal look" that was really elaborate seems new to me. Hoop earrings, hair dye, gimmicky accessories, dramatic eye makeup... this stuff was kind of the province of chicks we considered "weird."
Am I just remembering wrong? If not, what happened? Was it the introduction of Bratz dolls, maybe?

It is rare to see a woman wearing a dress.

Kinda, kinda not. Women have always wanted to dress in new fashions with individual styles. It’s just much easier today. 30-40 years ago you had to go to department stores and had a limited selection. Now you can buy 17 different wardrobes at the push of a button. You see a diversity of style, which leads to More individual looks. It’s not because women changed, it’s because shopping did.

I remember that the Pat Benatar look was a thing for some girls.

This was THE look in the 80s. What world do some of you live in?

You sound old enough to be from when women thought washing their hair once a month was enough.

As a dad to an 11 year old girl I have observed that they're paying attention to how they look. A close relative of ours owns a clothing store that the 11 year old works at periodically, and the relatives treat her like their mini me, so she's always dressing up.
Beyond all that I don't know.

This!
Almost every woman under 30 has some sort of visible tat. Maybe the douchbags of the day love that stuff, but I think they're ridiculous and completely unattractive.
I didn't mind the tramp stamps back in the day; at least those were hidden (until they weren't ).

We have a 16 y.o. daughter.
They are legitimate retards, TikTok and its influencers have ruined a generation.
The dichotomy of teenage girls post Covid, we wear shorts, all of them, so short an arse check and arse hair is hanging out, but we wear mom jeans and vintage 80’s V-neck sweaters.

90s Grunge era/heroin chic drabness.
Go back 60 years and you get this
or 50 years to this
The 80s/90s were a conservative reaction to the freewheeling 60s/70s.

What? You must have lived a very sheltered life being in such a tight bubble.
The major difference now is that younger fat people wear normal size people outfits with midriffs. Fat people used to keep their stomach hidden behind clothes. Now they look like this:
