Why are democrats/liberals upset at JD Vance’s speech in Munich?

I just finished watching it and the main point/thesis was that Europe needs to be hesitant to proceed with these laws curtailing speech/expression. And he sharply criticized Romania for cancelling the results of a free election.
Isnt free speech perhaps the single most fundamental liberal principle out there?

Free speech is absolutely protected in Europe. Just don’t say anything that’s not truthful or offensive.

He referenced both Right and Left wing parties that were excluded from being invited to the Security meeting. This included the AFD which most brainwashed Germans associate with Hitler loving extremists. They have been shamed all their lives for the atrocities of ww2 and any indication of nationalism is auto-attacked as nazi! Beautiful country, lived there many years, great people, but the trauma of ww2 hinders most of them from seeing the light.

The AFD is mostly the rural states within Germany. You’d be foolish to think they are a small vocal minority. My German friends who live in the states are all supporting the AFD.
