Michigan nearly loses because they play one of the worst special teams games in history and who is Michigan's special teams coach? None other than Jay Harbaugh.
How does this continue to be allowed at major public universities?

Football isn't horseshoes. They're going to play for a natty.

Is their special teams normally bad though?

Dude probably qualified by name alone... I ain't got a problem with it... hell I deal JR's and "T-" that have no idea what they doing on a everyday basis

Iowa's nepotism is far worse than anything we've seen, moreso than the Jeff Bowden years at FSU

As I posted in another thread, it goes all the way down to the high school level. I've seen guys get head jobs and coordinator jobs they didn't deserve over more deserving candidates just because their daddy was some long standing head coach.

Its worse in the NFL.
NFL teams are private businesses. Not the same as a publicly funded university allowing it.

While it may have been a bad game, I think the Harbaugh name probably gets the benefit of the doubt considering one brother has the #1 team in college football while the other has the (current) #1 team in the NFL

Is it really the coaches fault Michigan players couldn't field a punt?

Michigan's return coverage was pretty great though. And it's college ball, kickers are going to miss.

It’s pretty bad in Iowa City… but will anything ever compare to Jay Paterno at Penn State?

This is the true sign of good or bad special teams. The coverage. Not a kid who muffs a punt.

Well at most of the big schools the majority of coaching salaries are paid by the booster organizations, not taxpayer money

I didn’t find them to be poorly coached. I think the returner lost it in the Sun once.
I think the way Bama’s punter kicked it made it tough to field. I also think the “moment” was big.

I don’t really think you can blame the coach for a player muffing the punt in game 14, unless you think he reaches them to drop it
Their kick coverage looked great all night which is far more a coaching thing

Yes, but a kid who fields a punt he has no business fielding and muffing it?
He has to know to let it go inside the 10! That is bad coaching.

You judge special teams by blocking formations and kick coverage. Michigan looked fantastic here all day yesterday

If you're undefeated, #1, and in the natty, you can probably hire whomever you wish.
