He has to know to let it go inside the 10! That is bad coaching.
That philosophy is becoming outdated in college and pros because of how good punters are getting at putting spin on the ball to make it checkup inside the 5 and teams downing it. Watch NFL games - they too are fielding punts at or inside the 10

They’re dumb too risking the worst turnover on the field for a small chance at a few more yards. If they’re getting there to down the ball they’re also there to cover

Harbaugh will soon have coached in both a Super Bowl and NCAA championship game.

is there a school that has had consistently great special teams over the last 5 or so years, other than maybe Georgia?

You are working with this guys 100+ a week in a very pressure filled stressful environment. You are going to hire people you trust more than anything else

Michigan nearly loses because they play one of the worst special teams games in history and who is Michigan's special teams coach? None other than Jay Harbaugh.
How does this continue to be allowed at major public universities?
Only a dumb arse would blame the Special Teams coach for losing a game due to a muffed punt.

He 1,000% knew that but there's nothing a coach can do once they're back there.
He was getting ready to field a punt in front of 93K fans and a national TV audience with an entire season's worth of work on the line.
Now have 10 freak athletes (punters don't count) fired out of a cannon directly at your body and keep your eyes focused on the sky above, and see if you can remember your own name in that moment.

NFL teams are private businesses. Not the same as a publicly funded university allowing it.
Except it is the same. Nepotism is taking place at different levels no matter who or what is allowing it.

Besides letting Sandusky hang around much too long, Joe Paterno used Penn State as a family employment service. His son was an assistant coach and his brother was on the radio broadcast team.

And Wade Phillips was a damn good defensive coordinator

There is tons of nepotism in college football and the NFL and it isnt really a new thing, Lane Kiffin comes to mind

There was a coach at Western Michigan that hired his sons as assistant coaches. One of them will be coaching in the National Championship game next week. The other has a Super Bowl ring as HC and currently has the best record in the AFC.
Dave Shula was my high school teammate. People were claiming nepotism when his father hired his as WR coach at 23. He eventual becane QB coach. They stopped bitching when Marino, Duper and Clayton smashed passing offense records.
Jay Harbaugh is also Michigan's safety coach. Would you rather have safeties that play like they were coached by Kerry Cooks or Jay Harbaugh?

Is their special teams normally bad though?
This is the thing. UM's special teams have been good all year long. Yesterday was an anomaly. Jay also is the S coach and previously TE coach... both solid groups for UM.

The buck stops with Jim Harbaugh. If he wants to bet his job on his kid, that’s his prerogative. It’s honestly no different than hiring/keeping guys you’re friends with, which happens all the time in coaching.
It usually works out fine because guys who earn 7 figures typically aren’t complete idiots.
