Desmond Howard mentioned there wouldn’t be as many bowl games if there wasn’t demand and he’s right.
I don't recall anyone saying or demanding for 5-7 teams or even 6-6 teams get bowl invites. And the ratings don't seem to support any sort of demand. I do remember when these invites started and there was an expansion in the number of bowl games that people said "these teams aren't deserving of a bowl trip".

Just do the 12 team playoff and scrap all other bowls. Expand to a 16 team format of you want more participation.

Pay all players in bowl games.

Ok Capt literal. Demand in the marketplace does not mean people were saying we want 6-6 teams in bowls. But for every person that’s says there are too many bowls and 6-6 teams shouldn’t be in (and I am one of those people) there is at least another that says “more football is better” and “you don’t have to watch”
You are wrong about the ratings, the first weekend bowls were beating College basketball. The ratings are fine people like betting on games, that’s a part (a big part) of the demand.

Let's not forget, ESPN made college football and basketball into the billion dollar business it is today. College sports has been their bread and butter from the beginning.
College sports would not be what it is today with out them.
They created the SEC network. They made the SEC into the powerhouse it is today. They constantly push who should be ranked, who should be in the playoffs, who should win the Heisman. They do this via Sportscenter, their talk show, their radio shows, their podcasts. They push the narrative they want to push for their own good. They have major pull in the College sports world.
I remember when they didn't have a contract with the NHL. You know what they never talked about on tv or radio? The NHL. They'd show highlights but they weren't going to talk about a product that they could not financially gain from. This is a fact.
Some of those Heisman winners, like Manziel, should thank ESPN for constantly running his highlight(s) against Alabama which swayed a lot of voters out there.
They also pushed teams to other conferences. They single handedly liquidated the Big East football programs to build up the ACC and later helping the Big Ten get into the DC and NY markets.
Side gripe:
4 team playoff would have been perfect when conferences were 10 teams back in the day. No need for a conference championship game either. Now they expanded these conferences with so many teams that you have no choice but to expand the playoffs.
College football has turned into pure greed by all those involved and now they are reaping what they sowed

ESPN needs to back away from the narrative that the playoff/NC is the only focus and goal. The problem is two-fold. First, the NC is not a viable goal for at least 80% of D1 programs (and never has been), and second, the top programs’ players are less likely to remain interested as soon as they lose twice.

Bowls outside of the new playoff need to go away.

I like the lower level bowls. I watch every one of them I can. If you don't like them you don't have to watch.
I do not like the opt outs and the bowl games have been devalued to meaningless exhibitions. The media has had a huge role in that. How to fix it? Start by talking up each of the bowls and make them important again. Stop hammering every single segment from the preseason to today talking about the CFP. It's all ESPN talks about, every halftime show, even during the actual bowl games. It's all CFP all the time. Maybe start talking about the importance of the bowls and focus coverage on them.

Then they always were. And so are most regular season games.

A few things probably need / should happen:
Fox needs to come in and wrest away part of the CFP away from ESPN. ABC/ESPN controls the bowl season and selection process especially in the current set up.
The expanded playoff to 12 will probably limit the insanity of the opt outs....at least for the 12 that are involved.
Reestablish the old format for TV on NYD.move the Cotton to 1030 am, the Sugar to 130 pm, the Rose at 400 pm and the Orange to 730pm
The following weekend have the semifinals on a Friday night and Saturday night.
Then move the NCG to the following Friday night
Have the "wildcard" games played on the night of December 23 or 26
Split the broadcast rights and alternate the NCG between Fox and ESPN
Opt outs are the new norm unfortunately but it will be on the lesser bowls but it could be limited - maybe. But at least for the 12 teams, I doubt if it would be a problem going forward. Probably limits the transfer portal as well.

I agree with them. The bowls are a relic of the past.

I saw this yesterday as well and it was hilarious watching Kirk sitting there acting like "how did we get here" when ESPN is the main culprit. But ask those kids who played in these "meaningless games" if they wished it didn't exist and they would tell you no. They wanted to play and they played. Good on them. If you don't like the games then don't watch them. Plain and simple.
And back to Herbstreit - I can't wait until he's "flabbergasted" as to why the big regular season matchups don't carry as much clout and drama as they used to when the playoff expands. The regular season will no longer be the high wire act it is that makes it so great. Someone better warn him now
