They're going on about how nobody cares, players don't want to play, how do we fix it.
Nobody mentioned the role their employer played in ruining the system.

That’s one of the best talks they’ve had on this show in a long time. Wish gameday could be stuff like that all the time.
You can tell these guys still have passion for stuff like this but clearly the producers push a lot of the shite on there we hate now
ETA: but I agree. ESPN has a huge role in this. But of course they can’t say that. They’d all be fired.
ETA2: like clockwork now they’re talking about Sarkisians outfit. Christ.

Desmond Howard mentioned there wouldn’t be as many bowl games if there wasn’t demand and he’s right. The Bowls have become content for ESPN but they are responding to the demands of the market place aka the fans.
But the entire sports culture that views anything short of the “championship” as failure is to blame, sure the “media” fules it but look in the mirror, the fans also fuel it.

Yes. Every thread about bowls has people describing them as “meaningless”.

Herbstreit floated scrapping the non-playoff/NY6 bowl format and instead having a secondary bracket tournament like the NIT.
Still not sure that solves the problem of disinterest and opt outs.

These bowls make some $$. So why not have a prize pool. Winning team gets more and it’s distributed to the players. Could work.

Yeah this is like an arsonist who burnt their own house down and then complaining they lost everything. Obviously these guys aren't going to stray to far from the ESPN narrative, but it's true the same people who sign their paychecks are the same people who're driving the sport off a cliff. They helped feed the beast and now they don't like it, cry me a river.
The closest I've seen someone come to really criticizing this whole thing was Fowler on instagram a while back. He was lamenting the end of the PAC 12 on one of his videos and people started blasting him for it. He criticized the powers that be and you could tell he loves the sport and it hurts him that it has changed so dramatically.

Whats the difference between a tourney that means nothing and bowls that mean nothing? I don't get what Herbie is going at here.

Herbie is talking about the games between 6-6 teams that no one cares about. Stupid comment because it's those games where the players try the hardest and that means the most to them. Ohio State guy would not be able to understand I guess

Herbstreit has been getting shellacked by anybody with a modicum of integrity regarding his deepthroating of Alabama getting into the playoffs.
ESPN and the selection committee lifted the veil this year.

Yeah didn't Herbie have a full on meltdown on Twitter a while back because people were mean to him?
Posted on 1/1/24 at 10:52 am to grsharky
Herbie is probably worth $100 million so he shouldn't complain about the system.

Idk where else to put this but since it's a gameday thread...
I had no idea The Rocks ex wife was his manager. that was some alimony.

Bingo, and I mentioned this in another thread. Kirk brought this up, seems like it's been two years or so, and he pledged to do something about it and he's done nothing. He still focuses on the playoff etc, just like ESPN wants him to do.
