At $85 a night that is a 2 star hotel.

I agree, we just got back from a week in Colorado. And we looked at both hotels and Airbnb and we thought the hotels were offering more options.
Maybe other areas are different

Sure you can. STR's were banned in Grapevine, TX while I lived there.

This was going to be my response. Citizens in Grapevine were quick to put that shite to an end.

When I travel I always just call up a local church and ask them to provide me with free lodging and meals with one of their parishoners

I just sleep in the Walmart parking lot with the other homeless.

Good luck. I will always choose to stay in a 1 BR bungalow for $60/night that also has a $130 service fee and $300 cleaning fee before I'd stay in a $85/night 3-star hotel.

I’ve given up on the AirBnB crap. I’ve stayed in a few and it’s always something. One AC doesn’t work, not enough towels. Last time the ‘cleaner’ didn’t empty the garbage from the previous tenant. Which tells u how good they actually cleaned. There’s too many owners who want to be STR owners because it’s cool and sexy but fail on the execution side.

I’ll never stay in ANY $85/night hotel. But a quality hotel is more consistent than a roll of the dice that STR’s has become.

Yeah, I wonder if they are actually washing the sheets in an STR and if they are they aren't drying them in a commercial unit that gets really hot and kills germs like a hotel does.

seems like the market can correct this problem without more government intervention, no?

I like airbnb with heavily trips. We would rent an apartment in LA or NY and it would be around the same as a hotel but everyone had space. Plus it gave us an idea of what it would be like to live in those cities.
Now I really only do hotels for US travel but I do a lot of foreign airbnbs.

Colombian bachelor pad in walled city Cartagena. $35/night. Hot tub on a ledge over the bed.

6th floor penthouse with sea views from every room including toilet. Isla Mujeres - $75

600 year old former Rabbi's villa, Toledo Spain with courtyard. $85

Just always need to check fees. They do sometimes scam with the cleaning fees.
I also used to rent houses outside of Disney World for $115 a night. Last hotel we stayed in, the Beach Club was $435 a night. I much prefer the airbnb house.

Though in every instance it's easy to see how you can be taking housing away from others.

I think it is going to happen over time.

I wonder how many AirBNBs were bought on ARMs and will see a dramatic rise in their mortgage soon.

I consult for a real estate software company, 60% of mortgage professionals have been laid off in the last year and there's no end in sight.

The (almost) only people buying houses right now are what we call investors - people who can buy with cash or extremely high down payments.

There is a housing market recession going on right now and it's really bad.

I am shocked by how many communists are on this board. We need to keep the government out of our lives and out of our business. Let people do what they want with their own private property. If you disagree, please move to North Korea.

You should see oxford Ms. there isn’t enough housing for students off campus. Parents own 2/3/4/5 air bnbs and charge a bazillion dollars on game weekends (yeah I know supple demand) but damn. There is literally not enough housing for the students who basically fund the town.

Yes short term rentals are absolutely a huge portion of the drive up in home values over the past decade. Now with inflation, these AirBNBs are about to go underwater, along with regulations against them in many places. Cheap homes about to be available
