Vintage Land Rover Defender Owners - Prudent Purchase or No?

Looking at pulling the trigger on a '86 and curious if any posters can share their experiences?
Similar to this one:
It's either this or an FJ60 Landcruiser, but I am having trouble finding one in decent condition that isn't astronomical.

I wouldn’t hesitate if you have a good mechanic and it isn’t a daily driver. I wanted a defender 90 bad.

Buy 2 so you can take parts off the crappy one.
My dad had a little older Land Rover than the one you posted and it was hell getting parts. Of course, this was before the internet really took off in the 90's.

Get an FJ60, they’re expensive but the prices aren’t ever coming down. Maintenance and replacement parts will be much easier to deal with.

You might as well just spend some Arkonik money up front because you will eventually spend it on parts and repairs down the road if you try to do it yourself

They all ride pretty rough. Its a tough ownership experience but if you are ok with that then pull the trigger.
All of these classic cars are getting stupid too. Square Bodies, F-150, hell even 1st gen 4runners (have an 85 myself) are just getting ignorant money right now.

Prudent? Hell no. If prudence is what your are shooting for get a Toyota Camry.

Range and Land Rovers are beautiful but why have they always had the reputation they are shitty cars?
Why wouldn’t a luxury company change that perception?

Lots of things to break coupled with trying to keep costs lower result in underengineered parts and components that fail.

The Land Rover looks great but you will def need to be mechanically inclined or know some guys who are. It’s gonna shite the bed, probably sooner than later. It’s part of the charm 
I have a 100 series with over 200k on the clock still trucking along just fine. That said it did have to get new brakes and a new steering rack recently but all that was not crush the bank money. I’d think with the 60 you’re gonna have to replace some stuff due to its age obviously, but it shouldn’t be too much $$ or hard to find a lot of the parts. And as far as reliability goes the Land Rover is not on the same planet as the Toyota.
I may be biased but I’d go with the 60 if you can find one. Or if you’re feeling super froggy a triple locked 80.

because a lot of people are realizing that they'd rather have a fairly simple vehicle that they can do some of the maintenance and minor mechanical work on over the modern day vehicles that are rolling computers.

I want a Defender but can't justify it. I bought a 2004 Discovery 2 last year and put a lift/tires and a few other things. It's been fun just to tinker with and I maybe have 11kish in the whole rig. It's fairly capable especially for that amount of money. I just wanted to be a little different and get something other than a Jeep.
As someone else mentioned, if you aren't wanting/willing to do ANY work yourself, it will get expensive, fast.

If the price is good, I would jump on it. These things have insane resale value these days.
