I started lusting after a 50s power wagon 10 years or so ago, turnkey restoration was like $90k back then , now same shop has a starting price of $325K.

Range Rover being a British manufacturer is why they aren’t good.

They do not build great cars for the most part.

FIL has an 86 LC, bought it from his son’s roommate in college 25 years ago. thing is still a beast, it’s going through a slow restoration right now and still pulled my 4runner out of a jam this past spring.

I saw some dude cruising around Alys beach in a baby blue defender with his Barbie doll girlfriend mugging everyone. Guy thought he was some commando going into the espresso shop haha

I may be biased but I’d go with the 60 if you can find one. Or if you’re feeling super froggy a triple locked 80.

This. Look for 93 or newer. Better brakes, longer wheel base, optional front/rear lockers if you get lucky. Plus in late 92 they switched from the 3F-E to the 1FZ-FE engines with the high pinion front diffs.

Old cars = problems, especially a British old car. Some people enjoy dealing with that and tinkering on them. If that's you, good deal. Just don't delude yourself that it's going to be a daily driver or anything. And best if you start boning up some mechanical skills.

Rover didn't have the cash to invest in them. That's why they had the quality issues in the 90s and early 2000s. The Series trucks are absolutely fine mechanically, but they're slow, leak, they're loud, and they're uncomfortable. The early Defenders aren’t much different, but the optional v8 motor makes them more practical. The Puma era trucks have better doors, and a better interior. The build quality remains poor though.

What are you buying? A refurbished import truck? Which motor?

The Toyota is a much better daily driver, and a period Gwagon would also be a great choice. I love the classics though, so I would actually get the Defender. But the Toyota and the Mercedes are better built, and more practical.

JLR is pretty serious about their classic parts division, so you can get what you need. They’ve also created suspension and brake upgrade kits, that help modernize old Defenders. It’s worth looking at.

There is a reason that the Toyota is worth so much more.

A good defender can fetch $70k+, I don’t think a 60 series Land Cruiser on its best day is getting close to that.
