The Gristmill in Gruene Tx. About 10 miles from New Braunfels. Best chicken fried steak I've had in a long time. Walking around downtown in Gruene is pretty cool. Lots of little old stores.

I'd go to Gruene River Grill instead. It's right next door and I think the food is much better.

agreed

gristmill is a very cool building/atmosphere though. Mediocre food at least what I’ve had

Gristmill’s food is ok. The setting/patio is one of the best around though.

Clear Springs is great but a commitment between traffic and waiting.

It's basically a slightly elevated Cracker Barrell, but I loved the space and enjoyed the hell out of my chicken fried steak dinner there.

Second on Alpine Haus, great German.

McAdoo’s is a great seafood place and has an awesome bar and atmosphere. Right next door is Myron’s steakhouse.

Gristmill is always a good place to eat.

Is blacks better than saltlick BBQ?

We are here in New Braunfels now and we're going to get BBQ this evening.

My parents are saying saltlick but the rarely have good suggestions.

It depends on what you like, but yes. It sounds like your parents may have been to Salt Lick before? It's good. A very cool place, but if you are a brisket man, you will probably be disappointed as their brisket is very forgettable. Their ribs though, are VERY good, as are their sides.

If it were me, I would head over to Lockhart and just take your pick from all the awesome places there. My favorite it Smitty's (they close at 6pm), followed by Kreuz, then Blacks. They are all so close to each other, you could even hit up every location if the lines aren't too long and get a little something of each and compare.

I absolutely agree. Significantly better food. We grew up on Pat’s Place enchiladas, hamburgers, and nachos. Also love the new Krauses’s for German beirgarden food. Kids are fine here too.

Salt Lick is good and a must try eventually but more so for the atmosphere & experience than the quality of the bbq. Their operation is enormous and can accommodate tour buses. If you go on a busy weekend you could wait an hour or more.

I've done that before, and bought items to go for later. I thoroughly enjoyed my afternoon in Lockhart checking the famous BBQ places out.
