What is the highest rank? President? Doubt anyone here.
I have a distant cousin I've never met that was commander-in-chief, but since that's not a military rank it doesn't count.

The woman I dated before I met my wife, her father was a retired Captain from the Navy. The man could make an immaculate bed and could curse like no one else I’ve met.

My Cousin just retired as XO of HMX-1 after 22 years as a Marine LTC.

For those who don’t know HMX-1 its the Presidential helicopter squadron. Marine One.

I am not blood related but one of those listed was lifelong friends with my great-grandfather, my grandfather referred to him as his uncle. I have copies of some letters they wrote one another. No career soldiers in my family, most all did their duty and went back to civilian life.

Fleet Admiral General of the Army General of the Air Force Five star ranks. Unless someone here is related to the following: William Leahy Ernest King Chester Nimitiz Bull Halsey George C. Marshall Dwight D. Eisenhower Douglas MacArthur Omar Bradley Hap Arnold No one here has such a claim.

General of the Armies is the highest US military rank, and Pershing is the only person who held that title in his lifetime.

While living yes, you are correct. Jimmy Carter posthumously promoted George Washington to the same rank with an effective date of July 4, 1776 and noted in the promotion that his experience and seniority was undisputed making him the single highest ranking officer that can ever exist in the United States military.

My great uncle, not by blood, retired from the Marine Corps as a Colonel, and his two brothers retired from the Navy, one as a Captain, one as an Admiral. All three graduated from the Naval Academy. I always thought it was interesting that they grew up in Laurel, MS, nowhere near salt water.

My great uncle was Deak Parsons.

He was the weaponeer on the Enola Gay and armed Little Boy in flight before dropping on Hiroshima.

Not sure of his rank, but always thought it was pretty cool.

Pretty sure I met him when I was a bartender and he was a little short of cash. Thanked him for his service and sent him on his way.

Brigadier General in Confederate Army

My serious answer would be an ancestor who was a brigadier general in an Illinois division under Grant. There’s a statue of him at Vicksburg. I wonder if our families have met before, sir.

He made full general as a retirement promotion, but was a breveted Brigadier General in action. From his birth in a small town in Ireland, all the way to Vicksburg, Mississippi. Life goes by fast.
