o you'd rather go with your best, against the worst, to not be 0-1, so that we can be at far greater risk of losing today, and being 1-1, which is exactly where we'd be if we lost yesterday and won today? What is the difference? The difference is we had a better chance of beating Tulane without Skenes than we did of beating OSU without him.
Was it really so hard for the guy to "lead" LSU to a national seed, when his roster was said to be one of the best ever? Is that really the defense? Well, Orgeron and Miles also "led" LSU to national titles. This whole charade of putting coaches on an infallible pedestal is tired and lazy.
LSU's coach knows more than you-get over it.

What isn’t being discussed is what do you do if you don’t start Skenes and we are down 4-1 in the 6th against Tulane?
Do you burn half the pen trying to get out of Tulane as this itself is not a pretty solution. Do you start to concede Tulane but that was meant to be your highest % win chance?
I would have used skenes game 2 but this is more the logic I see from Jay. That and rest for Skenes plus a normal rotation.

How would starting Skenes have changed that? Would they have been better off to start Skenes and still lose 2-1?

The point was that if u dont start Skenes and get down, burning the pen game 1 while facing a possible loss is not an enviable situation. Conceding and saving the pen is a terrible outcome as well. To your point, if you start Skenes and lose this of course is a poor outcome.

There are other baseball coaches far more accomplished than CJJ who think it wasn't the wisest of decisions.
To be blunt it was stupid and irresponsible. If I'm OSU, I couldn't be more happy with CJJ's decision.

Lol, nice try to spin it but you are dead wrong. Their starting pitching did great. The bull pens of those teams gave up the runs

How was Tulane “hot”? What was their record in the 10 games prior to the conference tournament?
Where did I say Tulane was hot? I specially said not every 4 seed was “hot”

Clearly, your definition of hot is simply winning the conference tournament, because that is the only way Tulane would be considered hot So, find us a 4 seed that didn’t win their conference tournament….
I said there are teams that aren’t hit as the 4 seed. I didn’t say anything about Tulane being “hot”

This I can agree with. I can’t say that I was shocked when I saw that Skenes was starting, but I was pretty surprised.

There’s only one justifiable reason to start Skenes yesterday, and that’s to have him on full rest for game one of a Super in your home park next week. But everyone has to accept that is a big gamble
“gamble” in our eyes. Jay is Omaha or bust. He’s managing to get there, meaning he was managing to win the super. A regional loss or a super loss is equally unacceptable, so jay made decisions that were Omaha based not Oregon State/ Sam Houston based

You don't make decisions in hindsight, you make decisions based off of sound logic by playing the percentages. You live with whatever result comes of that
I’m not positive about this, but wouldn’t LSU’s staff minus Skenes be far superior to any other staff in this regional minus the guy that started Game 1?
That is, would you rather be going into today with LSU’s available pitchers or any other in the regional?
What are the percentages of it is assumed Skenes gets you a W either way? I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, but your competition’s pitching has to be a part of this logical sequence, right?

If you're not setting yourself up with the best chance of winning the regional, because you're scared of losing game 1
See this is where you guys keep losing me, you keep assuming throwing Skenes is playing “scared” but are preaching logic. There’s plenty of reasons to throw him Game 1, and I think Johnson showed his logic by keeping him in all game. It wasn’t about being scared, it was about trusting bats and the rest of the staff relative to the competition.
It’s a gamble, and he could very well lose and give himself an easy line of criticism. But if anyone is scared, it would be easy to argue that it is the guys on this board that wish Skenes was going tonight and can’t get over that he won’t.

That's just what most of us who question the decision are arguing from.

If anyone knew about psychology in sports, it was Bertman. But he never tried to overthink it with something like this. He always saved his ace. Seemed to work well for him.
Bertman was never in this situation, so it’s a bad comparison.
1. Bertman played 8 team regionals in an era in which only a handful of teams took college baseball seriously. Bertman could have made everyone bat wrong handed and beat the first team.

Didn’t Bertman start our ace, Mestepey, against #4 seed to open 2001 regional?

These three top 16 seeds lost and have a tough road.
They all played a team 20 games under .500?

True. It’s a gamble for the regional that the staff will respond the way they did last week while the bats get better. The latter were improved with runners in scoring position yesterday, which had been iffy the last few weeks. But I agree that Johnson is strategizing for the long-term, not just this weekend.

If we can’t play well enough to win this home regional we also don’t deserve to go on either. LSU needs to play well regardless.

The parity in the sport these days make it real hard to overlook teams
For three one seeds possibly headed to 0-2 is unheard of before the smaller rosters
Maybe lsu could offer a tanner hall or the one at Nicholls
All I know is tomorrow is gonna be a lot of offense in Baton Rouge

The decision to start skenes makes slot of sense to me.
Basically assured you’re in the winners bracket which is less taxing on the team and bullpen. Add in he throws a complete game and you’ve left the staff setup nicely.
I get the argument, but I think CJJ realized the importance of this team starting out hot.

Yes, cause you save your ace for game 2, either to take you to game 3 for the championship or save your season...I bet USM wishes they had Tanner right now wouldn't you think?
With the potential matchup to be against Auburn if they had won you would really want your ace...the USM fans are livid that Tanner was on the mound for that game...and USM lost because they stranded 14 runners on base...
They are beating Auburn right now. Auburns ace got hit around pretty good.
