In Christian Clark's latest podcast he says he's expecting a "shakeup" to the coaching staff to happen. Shakeup is an interesting choice of words because he really only thinks bringing in an assistant with former Head Coaching experience is likely. One coach replacing a low level assistant isn't much of a shakeup, but he used the word shakeup multiple times. That makes me think the shakeup will be in the hierarchy, ie this new coach will be the new or co lead assistant.

quote:

I guess a little bid of news of things to come. I would expect a shakeup on the Pelicans coaching staff. Not Willie Green or anything. Jarron Collins is going for the Detroit Pistons job right now. Jarron has done some really nice work but I think he's probably not the front runner there, and I think the Pelicans would love him back. But I guess they've already got to replace Ryan Panonne who's going to be an assistant at Alabama, and I would expect at least one more change, and from the things I've heard, I think the Pelicans would like to get an assistant on staff with head coaching experience.

I think they would like a seasoned hand on the bench to provide some support for Willie Green. I think Mike D'Antoni kind of served in that role last year a little bit. From what I was told Willie and Mike D'Antoni communicated pretty frequently, but it's obviously not the same when the guy is not with you on the bench over single day. So I would expect the Pels to target a former head coach, when they do the shakeup of the coaching staff.

So which assistants would you axe? This should be an interesting list.

I don't know what assistant needs to be axed but it is obvious we need a strong strategic presence on the bench and at practice.

It'll be interesting to see who goes since the only guy Willie actually had the autonomy to hire was Collins. Everyone else was retained/promoted from the old coaching staff or hired internally probably by the organization.

I’d axe Weatherspoon so Zion will demand a trade and we can actually get some players in for him that will play some games.

Could ex-Raptors head coach Nick Nurse be a possible fit?

Sam Mitchell has wanted to get back into coaching, and he has a great relationship with Zion and his stepdad.

Also is a guy players love, but he’s disciplined and very X’s and O’s. He’s who i hoped they would bring in as Willie’s second in command when he was hired and i still want him.

Willie don't want that smoke... Nurse is a much better coach than he is, and everyone knows it, so as soon as we falter, people will start calling for Green to be fired and for Nurse to be given the job...

Green would basically be signing his own death certificate...

Nick Nurse won a title and will win another one. He’s more likely to be a replacement than an assistant.

Former head coach sounds more like a Nate McMillan, Kenny Atkinson, Brett Brown, Frank Vogel, Scott Brooks, or Terry Stotts.

Nick Nurse and Mike Budenholzer (if let go) can get head head coaching jobs immediately.

It's difficult because the names are really exciting and it's hard to tell how in tune each is to *today's* NBA vs. the NBA as it existed when they were hot assistants and then HCs. For that reason guys it's ideal to take more up and coming guys and let them grow then retread yesterday's news. For that reason a system that grows a Ryan Panonne that goes off to HC elsewhere is great, and ideally the Pelicans would have played better this year and Panonne would be raises to assistant HC. But unfortunately we need the structure of an old HC and if bringing one in it's likely over Panonne who then leaves for an assistant HC promotion himself.

I can see a guy like Kenny coming over as he was part of the same system Willie was in (GSW) and maybe sees an opportunity to help someone that is NOT Steve Kerr.

I’d be intrigued to get a guy like Stotts

Im not sure if Bud does immediately. His brother just died and he had some brain farts against the Heat. I would love for him to come on board even fir a year as an assistant to help Willie. I know as a head coach hes been questionable but hes also won a championship with a freak on his roster (Zion).

I think we’ll be happy with any legit former head coach that is still relevant. But I agree with Soggy that I like Sam Mitchell best. Getting Zion more on track is the biggest X factor and he’s the only candidate with the potential to do that.

Willie’s coaching issues were real, but largely came from the injured roster not having what he wanted. It’s on Griff to get Willie a roster that better fits how he wants to play.

It’s probably Casey Hill.

How is this news. All he says is expect one guy to be added. How is this a shakeup?

I didn’t like Sam Mitchell but I didn’t realize he has a relationship with Zion and his family. Obviously that’s huge and needs to be considered. Stotts has always been a good offensive coach. Maybe we can get rid of Casey Hill and bring in Mitchell and Stotts?

That’s what I said. I don’t think he was trying to be sensationalistic, I think the implication is that the new coach is going to get squeezed in near the top of the coaching hierarchy which will push others down.
