Oregon Gov. Kate Brown commutes sentences of state's 17 death row inmates
Democratic Gov. Kate Brown of Oregon announced on Tuesday she is commuting the sentences of the state's 17 inmates on death row, noting that their sentences will be changed to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Brown, who is set to leave office next month, said her order will take effect on Wednesday.
"I have long believed that justice is not advanced by taking a life, and the state should not be in the business of executing people — even if a terrible crime placed them in prison," Brown said in a statement.
No prisoner in Oregon has been executed in 25 years.
To date, 17 people have been executed in the U.S. this year, all of which were carried out by lethal injection, according to the Death Penalty Information Center. All of these executions took place in Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona, Missouri and Alabama.

Spitting in the face of every DA, judge, and jury member who worked on these cases, not to mention the victims

She unilaterally modified the statute allowing Capital Punishment in Oregon.
Rules for thee, not for me.

Progressives always know better than everyone else. Just ask them.

And don't think for a second that left wing activists won't be moving on towards getting them released next. And when they do get released and kill again the blood will be directly on their hands.
Thing is, they won't care. Cults be like that

There’s a good chance that most of the victims and their families voted for her.

Maybe the next governor will reinvoke their original sentences and expediate them.

I’m pro life so I support this.

Avg cost per year for a prisoner in a state facility is $106K. So $1.8MM per will be spent to keep those who committed such heinous crimes that groups of their peers decided they needed to not only be removed from society, but they no longer deserved to consume oxygen or resources from society.
We've lost touch with the reason for the prison system. If someone cannot be rehabilitated, or cannot be a productive member of society. At what point does society lose obligation to them?
$106k... taxpayer dollars would have far greater impact rehabilitating those that can be, and areas of social care that can help prevent crime from being "the only option".

She's saying a murderer's life is more important than the elderly, sick, or babies.

And the families of the victims get to pay for it. How's that for a slap in the face?

If there hasn’t been an execution there in 25 years then the end result isn’t much different I guess. But for her to just do this is insanity. They had their days in court and the court, jury, and judges decided their fates. And now she’s just like “nah..”?
The fact that there are so many on death row NOT being executed is the real problem. People should not sit on death row for decades. You want prison reform? Let’s start there.

I only pity the jury members and their time. The others are paid to do a job. The death penalty is a polarizing topic, and like abortion, most people have a view that is against it means totally against it no matter the case.
I know the DAs do a lot of work to get these convictions but I suspect many of them only care how it affects their careers. So, if the sentences are commuted it won't affect them at all.

Scary how many "small-government conservatives" around here are totally ok with the state having the authority to kill one of its own citizens.
Also, the pro-life contingent around here is only pro-life until the fetus is born. They don't give a shite beyond that.
