Would it bother you a M.D. requires you to call them "Doctor" outside of medical setting?

Spinoff, I have a colleague that corrects people in public when they call them by his first or last name outside of medical setting.

For example at the dealership service dept they call for Jack Smith he corrects them as " It's Dr. Smith" dinner reservations are always Dr. Smith , etc.

Curious if this is acceptable as he has earned that that title or is it a bit pretentious?

I had to refer to my father as “Dr. Dad.”

His insecurity is on him. Just ignore him.

I don’t work in customer service so I just wouldn’t do it

Just shorten it to Doc and everyone is happy. It's a respect thing and I have no problem with calling him/her as Doc.

ETA - My bad, you meant people that don't know him like a customer svc rep. Yeah, that's extremely odd and a-hole-ish.

I’d say “Sorry, Dr. count Jack Smith”.

I don’t think it would bother me, but I’d definitely consider that person a loser.

Sounds like he barely "earned" it at a shitty medical school.

No, I'd just refuse to do it so everyone can see how much it bothers him/her.

This.

The only time Scruffy expects anyone to call him doctor is when he is with patients, a courtesy that he performs for all other physicians, including trainees. You really shouldn’t call someone by their first name in front of a patient. It shows a level of respect and professionalism.

That should be done.

Otherwise, most people outside the hospital who meet me don’t even know.

I know dentists who want to be referred to a Doctor, that's 10x worse.

Douche

I'll never forget sitting at a restaurant and overhearing the table next to me where a man had to address his father-in-law as "Dr Bob"

A lot of doctors do this and yes it’s pretentious

It doesn’t bother me as much if he is actually a medical doctor. I hate when some college professor does it

I’ve known a few chiropractors who insist on being called “Dr.”

GTFO.
