I call my MDs Doctor. Older or younger, it's a sign of respect that I hope they've earned.
Had a fraternity brother who's father was an MD. At Homecoming or something with parents involved, someone called him Mr Smith and he corrected them. It seemed pretty stupid at the time, and remains stupid ~40 years later.

quote:No, it is in no way, shape, or form acceptable. He's a loser and could benefit from these people telling him they won't call him that. That's dumb.
For example at the dealership service dept they call for Jack Smith he corrects them as " It's Dr. Smith" dinner reservations are always Dr. Smith , etc.
Curious if this is acceptable as he has earned that that title or is it a bit pretentious?

i’ll be brief, i’m not likely to be friends with someone so easily offended as me not calling them a Doctor outside of a medical setting.

I absolutely LOVE the ones who, for instance, have a Doctorate in education and ABSOLUTELY INSIST on being called "Doctor".

My MOTHER has a Doctorate in education... She sends her grandchildren their birthday and Christmas cards with the return address Dr.... And her name

I have a customer who has an honorary doctorate and he will ask people to call him Dr.
I make an effort to never call him by name. Just stuff like
Hello, sir! How are you today?
He is a yankee douche who came here from Duke university. Ill take his money but he will never have my respect.

On my son's soccer team, there were 2 players whose fathers were M.D.'s and one whose father was a nurse. I overheard the Doctors call the nurse a douche because he wore green scrubs at work so people would think he was a Doctor. I didn't realize the color of scrubs was a thing but the guy was a huge douchbag.

Their reimbursements keep going down and they hate that they took on so much debt - this all they have left.

They’ve worked hard & earned it, I don’t have an issue calling them Dr out of respect, but someone who demands it seems like a douche nozzle.

My wife’s grandpa was a doctor. He’s 89 and people that know him still call him “Doc” or Dr. Clark.

frick that. My wife is manager of a doctors office her best friend from college owns. When I go to office I say doctor. When we hang out, I says "what's up good looking ".

It's just another shot to boost their stupid ego.

I like to make DRs thank me, and others who own businesses, for subsidizing their lifestyle.

I would laugh at my wife if she tried to require this. She is the complete opposite. She gets embarrassed if someone calls her doctor in public.

Totally unacceptable.
If I'm that service manager I'm telling him "OK, I'm sorry, must not be you. Is there a Mike Smith here? Mike Smith? Anyone??" Until he gives in and says "That's me."
Secondly, if someone ever tries to correct you that you need to address them as Dr, the best course is to fall over dying laughing, then look at them with a straight face "Oh shite, you were actually being serious!?! Yeah, that's not going to happen."

I've only met one person like that, it was a lawyer who would always make people put the suffix "J.D." at the end of his name. I first noticed it on a wedding dinner table card and then started thinking back about other times he did that. He would always tell people how he was a lawyer, would work it into any convo. Guy would twitch if he couldn't interrupt you to let you know that he was in fact a barrister.
