Before Elon Musk changed his Twitter bio to "Chief Twit," Twitter established a permanent work-from-anywhere arrangement for employees. But with half the employees fired, in a move to reduce costs due to advertising revenue declines, Musk sent an email to all remaining employees to report to the office immediately.

On Wednesday evening, Musk sent out the first email to employees about "difficult times ahead" and the end of remote working unless he approved it, according to Bloomberg. The new rules were enacted immediately, requiring employees to be in the office for at least 40 hours per week.

quote:

"The road ahead is arduous and will require intense work to succeed," Musk told his employees. In another email, he added, "over the next few days, the absolute top priority is finding and suspending any verified bots/trolls/spam."

Musk announced earlier this year at Tesla Motors that working from home was not an option.

Musk's attempt to transition Twitter from an ad-powered business to a subscription-based model will have its challenges.

I'll be curious to see if he can navigate this transitional period. Elite workers in tech aren't really used to being micromanaged. It will be interesting to watch.

This policy won't work over the long term

He might be doing it as a means of weeding out the undesirables and will relax restrictions later to bring on elite talent

I agree on some of that with Tesla but Twitter is essentially purely IT. Limiting the employee pool with that move I would think.

Tech layoffs are coming fast and furious. Facebook added 11K yesterday and it's only going to get worse before it gets better. I doubt any workers are going to be looking to quit over being micro-managed.

Doubtful.

He has done the same with Tesla. Told workers to get back to the office as soon as the CV crap was over and especially any managers that they have to be at the office. He hates WFH.

zero reason for a tech worker to have to be at a desk in an office. This move is so the 8 different bosses can hassle Peter Gibbons about the cover sheet on his TPS Reports.

For the average worker? Sure. For the elites?

The tech space might have the largest ROI in the gap between a "good" employee and a "great" one.

So that is kind of a funny statement. The "Elite" workers are far less than most people imagine.

Tech companies and most IT departments are filled with people who think the are "Elite", but really that status is propped up by just really tribal knowledge of a system or language.

Tech workers are really easily replaced at the operations/maintenance/coding level. Creativity/Architect level is where you need to waste time buttering them up.

Tech layoffs are overblown. It's Silicon Valley titans like Meta and Twitter that were already bloated and went on hiring sprees during Covid that are laying off. Amazon/AWS and a bunch of non-tech companies are still hiring tech talent. Implementing full in-office work is a dumb move and will only top talent to leave.

Tech layoffs in the past week

Layoffs announced in the last day:

- Lyft 13% of workers
- Opendoor 18%
- Stripe 14%
- Chime 12%
- Twitter 50%
- Facebook 11K

Tech workers are going to be in low demand for a while like any other nonessential job during a recession. No one is spending money on apps right now like they used to. Facebook ad revenue is down big time so even advertisers are cutting back. Anyone left on Twitter will have to do what Musk says.

He's doing the Lord's work. I hope he has enough money to buy Reddit too. I just got banned for 7 days for...I honestly have no clue. I haven't commented or posted for over a month. I do, however, report the majority of posts as "Hate"...because that's what Reddit is. Guess they don't like that. They can't ban me from nudes on reddit...

This, plus to drive culture change. He has repeatedly said that Twitter has a lackadaisical and inefficient culture.

There is nothing elite about twitters tech. It is extremely small ASCII data points at scale.

Allowed to be organic, it’s simple as frick.

It is the mind shaping and gaslighting algorithmic work where the elite guys can come in. However, hopefully that is being pulled out of the platform.

Remember: It's perfectly OK for Mark Zuckerburg to FIRE 11,000 Facebook employees but god forbid Musk fired dead weight at his company

Another perfect example of double standards

I disagree. And being in tech, I don’t see a decline in new postings.
