Seems like he should have done that before the layoffs. I bet a bunch of people would have quit eliminating the need for severance

Start-ups or established companies?

I think Uber is about to lay people off too IIRC

Yeah boomers had pensions, so this forcing people to the office will not work. They will just go work remote at the next company, terrible move by Elon

He must be secretly trying to destroy Twitter. This board has a lot of corporate bootlickers who believe in face time at the office, etc but in tech WFH is almost expected. This could be a novel way to get people to quit without having to pay a severance. If not it’s pretty brainless.

Elite workers in tech aren't really used to being micromanaged. It will be interesting to watch.

So being in the office is now equivalent to being micromanaged? You realize micromanaged is a series of actions and not a location right?

I’m a firm believer that the flexibility of work from home is incredible for the worker, however it sucks for the company. How many good ideas aren’t really explored because you’re not just shooting the shite with coworkers over lunch or while getting coffee and you just happen upon something? It also very much disassociates employees from each other making it very easy for employees to change jobs.

Again, great for the employee, bad for the employer.

It is the mind shaping and gaslighting algorithmic work where the elite guys can come in. However, hopefully that is being pulled out of the platform.

This

Elon just wants it to be a public forum

The “elite” tech talent was only needed to create algorithms to shape whatever narrative they wanted.

I mean, I casually talk to my co-workers just as much as a remote worker as I did when in the office.

This policy won't work over the long term

He might be doing it as a means of weeding out the undesirables and will relax restrictions later to bring on elite talent

In other words, it will work over the long term

Making them work in the office isn't being micromanaged, that is just a regular job. I work everyday in an office but my boss is not a micromanager.

So you casually video chat coworkers on teams or webex or Skype?

I think there should be a clear distinction here between tech companies and tech jobs.

App based companies have been mostly bloated for a while and needed a reset. Outside of strictly tech companies, the tech job market seems good to me. And a lot are remote.

If I worked at Twitter, I guarantee I’d be exploring my opportunities right now and I don’t think I’d have issues finding something worthwhile.

I'm sure something else will come about and make Twitter obsolete.

When it comes to a lot of tech jobs, most were majority WFH before COVID. And worked just fine.

SO is in IT security/forensics. Aside from going in once a week to meet a vendor, they’ve handled all business WFH since about 5 years after he started with his company (Fortune 500) and he’s been there for 16. When he worked for Microsoft before that, it was a partial WFH position.

The move back to the office makes sense for some, but not really for IT.

Trust me, as a tech worker, Slack/Teams/Skype might actually be a better way to casually communicate with co-workers than in person

Yeah, set up some meetings so the micromanagers think you’re working.

This is huge and a significant issue, but I imagine on this board their is no sympathy for the employer, even ones that are hurting due to WFH turnover and general disinterest in the work.

You won’t have trouble, lots of companies now hiring tech/programmers to automate operational functions and accounting functions

Yep. Unless twitter is constantly completely rewriting their algorithms, they can operate fully with less staff. Great move by Musk to weed out the undesirables.
