American Airlines and Boom Supersonic today announced the airline’s agreement to purchase up to 20 Overture aircraft, with an option for an additional 40. American has paid a non-refundable deposit on the initial 20 aircraft. Overture is expected to carry passengers at twice the speed of today’s fastest commercial aircraft. Boom Supersonic’s Overture would introduce an important new speed advantage to American’s fleet, which is currently the simplest, youngest and most efficient among U.S. network carriers. Under the terms of the agreement, Boom must meet industry-standard operating, performance and safety requirements as well as American’s other customary conditions before delivery of any Overtures. “Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers,” said Derek Kerr, American’s Chief Financial Officer. “We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers.” Overture is being designed to carry 65 to 80 passengers at Mach 1.7 over water — or twice the speed of today’s fastest commercial aircraft — with a range of 4,250 nautical miles. Optimized for speed, safety and sustainability, Overture is also being designed to fly more than 600 routes around the world in as little as half the time. Flying from Miami to London in just under five hours and Los Angeles to Honolulu in three hours are among the many possibilities.

And yet American will still cancel flights and have the worst customer service in America.

Reactionary American Airlines is being reactionary again. United has had an order for a ton of those for years.
Meanwhile, Delta will still be flying 30 year old planes around, albeit retrofitted on the inside.

Interesting.
Why did the Concorde go out of fashion?

...and they've already cancelled a few of the flights with no rescheduling.

Interesting timing with all of the current headwinds against international business travel. I hope the economies of it work, though. Europe isn’t terrible from the US, but that would be a great option to Asia if it isn’t price prohibitive.

can't imagine how much that will cost...isn't that why concord went out of business?

But what about the carbon footprint?

I'm going to assume I will never be able to afford to fly on this unless they take my AA miles.

I really, really don’t like to fly and I’d be way more likely to do so if I could get almost anywhere in the world in around 6 hours. I get mentally exhausted from freaking the frick out at the 4 hour mark and it ruins my trip, so a 3 hour flight to Hawaii would be awesome

They need them to make up for all of the delays they have on the ground.

Airlines that take off on time will land before AA’s super sonic birds do.
Give me SWA all day long.

I flew on a Concorde from NYC to Paris when I was 8. IIRC the flight took about four hours.

All that speed, just to make passengers late to their connecting flights through DFW.

so do they use solar power or just a really long extension cord?
something that burns a truckload of jet fuel every 30 seconds doesnt sound like its green new deal friendly

Earliest delivery estimate is around 2030. I’d be surprised if they made that date. Maybe in another 12-15 years. A lot goes into making something like this and even after it’s made there will be a few years of testing.
