Go with a 3/4 ton gasser. Even if you Ignore the higher routine maintenance costs for a diesel, the repair costs are out of this world. You have to drive diesels kind of hard, at least occasionally, to get the turbos hot enough to burn the carbon off. It’s about a 16 hour job to remove a turbo on a duramax if the vanes get stuck.

And this is why I like the cummins the best. When you open the hood you can see there's an engine in there. Open the hood on a Ford or Chevy and it looks more like a drunk money tried to build a chemical plant. I wish ford and Chevy would use straight 6 engines instead of V8's. Its so much better for so many reasons.

I hear those Ford and Chevy designers hunt their swamp deer with .243s instead of the tried and true .338s

If you live in an area that has CNG, Chevy offers its duramax’s with a CNG kit. Diesel and gas will stay high for a while, CNG is cheap.

1200lbs on that 5.3 is nothing, I wouldn't even put the tow/haul on for that.

Stick with the 5.3 or look at the 3.0, I have heard nothing but good things about it. And the 22s are rated for around 13.5k towing.

I went with 6.6 gas. 2022 gmc 2500 denalli. Gets really good mileage for a truck that size. And more than enough power to pull. Great not paying extra in diesel right now lol

Only way I’d go back to a gas truck is if I bought a TRX or one of those 900 HP Hennessy trucks in the TRX.

I was heading to my farm yesterday and had to stop at lowes to pick up a couple of bolts for our little boat.
As I’m walking in a guy in a ‘18 to ‘20 sierra 2500 gasser (I don’t remember the year he told me) stops me as asked me if that tundra was mine.
Started talking and he was telling me about some of the issues on his truck. Had already replaced the transmission and he said all the lights on the dash were on at that time.
Said he never wanted another one.

Why not get a 3.0 liter turbo charged diesel 1500?

I average 28 mpg, ride is great and can tow 12,000lbs.

Why have the higher operating cost of a diesel but yet only the towing capacity of a half ton?

I wouldn’t want to tow 12k with a half ton truck. Getting it moving is the easy part. It’s stopping it and keeping it under control when things aren’t so controlled . Thats when you appreciate the larger brakes, exhaust brake etc

I’m late to the party but I am about 9 months into owning my first 3/4 ton a diesel Sierra. Yes price if diesel sucks and maintenance will suck. However there is such a night and day difference between gas and diesel and 1/2 vs 3/4 ton I will never go back.

I needed the ability to pull a gooseneck so I needed to move up to the 3/4 ton but even towing lighter loads like bay boats and such is so much easier. I’m hooked and I’ll pay the difference for the ability to pull and stop with it.

We’ve had a bumper pull travel trailer before and now have a 5th wheel. It’s much easier to tow and a much more relaxing drive. It’s got me looking for a gooseneck to tow my equipment. My bumper pull trailer will handle everything I have but it’s maxed out and can get into the tail wagging the dog sometimes. I can probably sell it for what I paid for it lol.

Towing 12K lbs with a half ton can’t be fun. Can you do it? I guess but it’s not something I would want to do very often.

I went with a 2020 Titan XD gasser. Smooth transmission. MPGs not bad for a big truck. Have 40k on her with no problems. I tow an aluminum bay boat (not heavy) and a trailer/tractor/UTV. The trailer/tractor weight about 8-9k. It pulls it easily and still gets about 10 mpg. Very underrated truck.

They are expensive to maintain.
Work at a diesel mechanic shop which it keeps me busy during my semi retirement.
If you do not need one do not get one.

Does anyone here have a Tremor or 3/4 ton gasser that prefers it over the diesel? I mean other than towing and extra costs of maintenance, I hear people talking about if you don't drive the diesel fairly often and far, it leads to engine issues (which I honestly have no idea if that is true or not).
