re: Are king cakes from Dong Phuong Bakery really that good?

The demand is not all that high, the Dong has limited supply to artificially create demand. In words... the fact that they don't produce that many of them, feeds the demand for them.
You’re an absolute idiot if you believe this. If you can sell 20% more at the same price, why in the hell would a business leave that money on the table? Working with food processors for 25 years, I understand how production works.

They are good. Not worth waiting for.
Overhyped only because people go nuts over them. Really think people are gatekeeping them at this point.

I tired one this week for the first time. I definitely think it’s the best king cake I’ve had.

Wrong.

They are ok. Breading kind of reminds me of a donut. Definitely nothing to freak out over

I agree. Did not enjy. Actually threw about half away. Will not be getting again.

I finally gave in and bought one last year and thought it was definitely overrated. It was “good” but wasn’t some culinary masterpiece
DongPhong is the ultimate hipster uptown yuppie king cake destination.
It’s a good king cake. Nothing more. And there’s plenty of good king cake in the area.
I prefer HiDo and fresh Randazzos. Gotta be fresh. With chocolate man. Gotta have chocolate.

Nah. That would have been true 3 or 4 years ago.

Guess that’s my question. Is it so good it transcends just king cake?

I paid 25 for cream cheese and 25 for delivery

Yes they are that good.
Family friend from Nola brought one over last weekend -- I had never heard of them--best king cake ever, with that fluffy pastry-like breading.
I'm not a fan of the doughnut and cinnamon roll doughy and chewy style king cakes.
This Vietnamese king cake was awesome, running neck and neck with Kellar's.

There are many styles of king cake. Some are mostly bread with sugar & icing on top. Some are basically a donut. It’s a preference thing & many people get stuck on what they grew up with.
In terms of taste & overall flavor, DP is on another level. I waited in line about 5 years ago & it was fun to do once. I did not regret. At the time, I think they were $16 & im looking at the line thinking if it’s me I’m charging at least $20 & probably more. As you can see today, they have raised prices quite a bit & people keep waiting in line for them. I’m too busy to wait that long this year, but not gonna lie I’d destroy a piece right about now

It is more like a pastry bread, soft and fluffy and has cream cheese whipped icing. If you don’t like cream cheese, you won’t like it.
Much lighter than the traditional ones, very good.

Absolutely not. Randazzo's and Antoine's are much better .

Was at a meeting in NOLA before Covid.
Tried it and really liked it then.
Texture was very fresh, light and it tasted good.

You sure about that? Tasted like margarine to me

All of the Randazzo's are pretty mediocre. Dense, dry, bland. I don't really get the appeal other than nostalgia

Work smarter, not harder.
Price isn't what matters. Profit is what matters. And really, marginal profit is what matters.

I have a number of restaurant / food production clients. 98% of them are terrible businessmen and have little to no financial sense.
