2:35 p.m., Thursday, from Ira -- Would like to be the bearer of great news, but have had a couple of conversations with people connected to FSU who are at least very concerned about this situation. I don't have it confirmed that an offer from Alabama has been made or is imminent, but two different people in separate conversations let me know that they are very concerned.

3:15 p.m., Thursday, from Gene -- As Ira indicated, things aren't trending in a favorable way for Florida State right now. Still tough to say anything definitively other than Norvell is someone Alabama is looking at, but it's also fair to say he's also not their first choice. My Alabama source believes they are negotiating with multiple parties as the same time and that Norvell is a fallback choice. Either way, it looks like Norvell will be getting a significant raise one way or another. If there's a positive from this, I don't think we'll have to wait too long to find out about his future.

quote:

3:50 p.m., Thursday, Gene -- Fox Sports' Joel Klatt is reporting that Kalen DeBoer is far in away the leading candidate for the Alabama opening. Reading the tea leaves, it sounds like DeBoer will be or has been offered the job, but Alabama is at the same time negotiating with Norvell and/or his agent in case DeBoer falls through.

quote:

5:10 p.m., Thursday, Gene -- I received additional confirmation from a strong source that DeBoer is currently Alabama's top target. It's very possible he already has an offer and is mulling it over. That said, we hear that Norvell's agent is also having conversations with both Alabama and Florida State. Should DeBoer fall through for Alabama then things could get dicey with Norvell.

quote:

10 a.m., Friday, Gene -- With the report that Mike Norvell is expected to meet with Alabama AD Greg Byrne, all eyes are on FSU's HC to see if this meeting actually takes place. Early indications are that Norvell is currently on FSU's campus preparing for visits from a couple transfer targets. I was informed that if an in-person meeting happens, a likely scenario would be for Byrne to fly into nearby Thomasville, Ga. and the two would meet up there at a private location. Of course, nobody said the meeting had to be in person. As such, it could be virtual so we would probably never know if it actually happened.

Interestingly, it looks like some of the betting sites have pulled down the bet on the Alabama's next head coach.

Norvell seems like an incredibly obvious choice at this point.

He had success in the South at Memphis, now rebuilt a program in the South in FSU to an undefeated season. But he got left out.

He knows he never gets left out at Bama even with a loss.

So bama is going to steal their playoff spot and their coach in a month and a half.

Agree. He knows how to play the game in the south. Deboer has no ties down here.

Norvell would jump at the opportunity IMO. Bama is obviously much better situated than FSU, but are people forgetting that FSU fans were calling for his head two years ago?

I can't see any reason for Norvell to turn down Bama.

Replacing Norvell with a really high quality coach with proven results becomes harder as well being in the ACC. Young and up and coming coaches will probably prefer to bide their time for an SEC or Big 10 job rather than the ACC, where they will have naturally be at a disadvantage.

He took over a mess and turned it around. I wanted Norvell at Arkansas and pissed he got away. It would be very Arky pass and him end up at Alabama and win a natty.

He's gone if Alabama offers. But Alabama fans don't like his entire team quit on him. It points to culture problems and scares Alabama fans away.
