It’s called business courtesy, and it exists in many forms. Relationships matter, there is an etiquette to these things. If you can’t see that I have to assume you’re not in business. Which is fine, but anyone else that has to deal with business relationships, it is obvious that a mistake was made here.

Maybe, maybe not.

But his buyout wasn’t known until the interview, that’s a fact. LSU wasn’t prepared to pay close to $2MM on a buyout that wasnt known. That’s a major deterrent

They knew after Auburn they were hiring a new DC

Nielsen was one of the front runners the day Bo was fired Dec 21st.

They had close to 3 months to do all the vetting and due diligence on potential candidates.

They had over a month to do all vetting on top candidates (Freeman, Arnet, neilsen). Yet they didn’t know about Arnet buyout or the clause in Nielsen’s contract.

To top it off, didn’t give a professional courtesy call to SP about Nielsen or to discuss the clause.
Absolutely!

Welcome to the Captain Eddie and Commander Scotty shite show!

You call the freaking Head Coach of an NFL team and talk to him directly.

That's just common sense and courtesy. (IF you have any)

No doubt in my mind that it didn't happen or we'd be talking about what Linebacker Coach does Nielsen want to hire or if Raymond will be allowed to coach both CB's and Safeties now.

I don't get upset that often in regards to LSU football any longer, but this is an embarrassment to the program.

It's unacceptably dysfunctional management.

$$$$Power Brokers$$$$$, Alums, (I am one) and Upper Level TAF's have their eyes wide open right now and are not happy campers.

Sorry not sorry to hurt your feelings. So everything that comes out about him is a lie then huh. He didn't completely go behind Miles back to get him out the door right? He wasn't a good coach but he didn't deserve to be shite on like LSU did to him so it's only fitting that LSU is starting to get their own medicine dosed on them.

When you shite can coaches like LSU is doing it starts to look like a pattern and don't think other coaches aren't taking notice. 3 coaches have clowned Orgeron. Arnett wasn't even interested in the job by all account, and Freeman/Nielsen both made him look stupid especially the "nielsen is like my son" only hours later telling him thanks but no thanks.

You have investigations going on, allegations, and an unstable program. Money being thrown around is apparently not enough to get coaches to come here right now to be the DC. Hmm.

You are one stupid frick.

Do you honestly think that’s the reason Nielsen didn’t take the job. He got a huge raise from the Saints and a promotion. He wouldn’t be the first coach to use a job offer fir a benefit.

didnt know arnett’s buyout before the interview this year,

That’s a lie that you just made up. Per Brodie Miller, the issue with Arnett were more about personality fit. They didn’t want another Pelini situation.

Not sure why my fellow LSU fans are mad at Payton here, it's pretty clear he didn't do his due diligence.

Sean Payton is trying to run an NFL team, and keep a solid staff. The Saints defense was top notch all season, especially the line. It seems pretty clear that Nielsen has elevated his position, as evidenced by him being named assistant head coach in addition to his previous title.
In other words, Payton wants to keep him on staff.

O should have checked before anything went public. They had to wait for the playoff run to end anyway, take another day and see what's up.

Oh noz a head coach being involved in his defense and offense. The horror. You sound pretty petty. Keep up the good work.

This assumes the HC knows WTF he's talking about.

LSU formally requested to speak with Nielsen. This seems like someone getting caught up in semantics because Ed didn’t ring Sean up personally.

Probably should've then. Payton is one of the more powerful coaches in the NFL.

Oregon told him to kick rocks, as well. Their insiders said his presentation was really poor. Are all 3 programs lying about the guy?

And was still coaching.. for a playoff team. We were clearly in contact with his agent before the playoff loss. Should we have been trying to hire him away in the middle of postseason game prep? How’s that for “professional courtesy?”

Freeman was vetted, offered, and ultimately decided to go to ND instead. Not sure how you can chalk that up to a lack of due diligence.

I keep hearing this. Source?

or the clause in Nielsen’s contract

Has nothing to do with them “not knowing the clause in the contract.” The issue was that they (and nobody in their right mind) thought the Saints would take the stance that NFL DL coach to LSU DC is a “lateral move.” It’s absurd quite honestly and I don’t know if the Saints even believed it. Seems more likely that they were stalling because they wanted to make a counter-offer, which might mean that Nielsen is going to be the Saints’ DC in the near future.

He said she said. You really came down to something that simple. You think Saints would have let Neilson go if only O would have called first? Simpletons.

First off, im not sure ive even seen it verified that lsu asked permission to speak to him.
Secondly, the coaching profession is a brotherhood. And payton is known to by petty, its part of what makes him great. So, if you want to pull a coach from him, its a good idea to be as cordial as you can. Doesnt sound like lsu was

So you don’t believe Twitter reports that LSU asked the Saints for permission to interview Nielsen, but you do believe Twitter reports that LSU didn’t call Payton?

Guess these 2 still have bad blood when Payton shite all over O when he coached for Saints.

I remember hearing that O decided half way through the season the NFL wasn’t for him and kinda checked out. Spend the rest of the season trying to line up a job back into college and it rubbed Payton the wrong way....
