This is just posturing after the fact. If our athletic dept contacted the Saints FO, that’s all that had to happen.

The reason the Saints wouldn’t play ball on a release or buyout is a lot clearer today than it was on Monday- they lost a defensive staff member to Detroit and now Allen is interviewing for a HC position. Those stories hit yesterday, but the Saints staff and FO surely knew on Monday. Losing another guy who they may be willing to promote to DC if Allen leaves would have been a big blow.

I think there’s a 99.9% chance this outweighed the lack of a courtesy call. Even if O had called Payton, they weren’t going to give Nielsen an easy way out of the deal.
To me Nielsen obviously got offered as part of his package the good old baseball promise... "for future considerations". And that future consideration was probably a promise for a shot at DC given enough time or, as you stated, others move on leaving a void.

didnt know arnett’s buyout before the interview this year,

Who cares? If they liked Arnett enough, the buyout wouldn't have mattered.

They didn't. They interviewed him, decided they didn't want him so didn't offer him.

This. The butthhurt regarding this is insane to me. What is Payton supposed to do? Just let a coach he wants / needs walk because LSU wants him and they’re the instate college? It’s ridiculous this is even a controversy.

The problem everyone should have is O once again handling this publicly and letting everyone know his target. He needs to stay quiet and make a hire.

The fact that Allen is interviewing for a head coaching position this year had to be a huge factor in him staying. Nielsen could legitimately be their DC in a week. That is a bargaining chip LSU had no way to match if he sees his ultimate future in the NFL.

Again, if the leaks had been controlled, O kept his mouth shut, and we just moved on to the next candidate (which may be happening for all anyone on this board really knows), the situation wouldn’t look bad. Those are the bigger problems with these searches.

Well, since I couldn’t give less of a damn about the Saints, I’m not going to pretend to be happy about it. But what they did certainly makes a lot more sense now than it did Monday night.

Totally agree about O. The negative perception is solely due to his public handling of matters. People here and in the media may not like it, but it’s time for a combo of Saban-style coach speak and silence.
