If I were an AD, I would not hire a coach that requires a buyout like Jimbo or close to it

It is absurd Jimbo is getting that much money to have sucked terribly. If I'm an AD at TAMU and looking at a Dan Lanning or Kiffin, and they want a 10 year $80 mil and require any remaining to be a buyout upon firing, I'd give them the bird and tell them to get out. I'd hire an FCS coach at like North Dakota St who has won 90%+ of their games. Being a head coach at a college program isn't rocket science. There have been countless men who seem very average and below average IQ win nati's. If O could piece together a nati, then there are plenty FCS coaches that could. Seems majority of coaches that have a winning history that are poached from another program seem to fail often. I'd go after G5 and FCS coaches that win often, but most importantly seem smart. To me when I hear Napier talk, I think this guy got a 19 on the ACT and tries too hard to come across as a hardass.
Jim Tressel is a perfect example of who I'd go for. Smart, well put together guy that won a ton at Youngstown St. Those are the guys you want. Smart and winning history at smaller time schools that you can pay 30-40% of a Kiffin.

You're free to hire the next Sam Pittman then.

Inredibly easy to say that from behind a keyboard on a message board. The football hire is the biggest hire an AD will make in his career. Of course you'd be willing to be riskier, you have nothing to lose.

If you knew every coach you ever hired would work out and never fail, you would be the greatest AD in the history of the universe.. you would also win the lottery every week..

but you will never be an AD so it really doesn't matter

Great. He can run the tutoring program.

I think we might be seeing a correction on these fully guaranteed contracts.
A&M “insiders” are making the rounds this morning that they aren’t paying their next coach $9-12M annually, and that it will be a middle of the SEC compensation package.
If one positive of this is that A&M is the first major domino to fall that we see these contracts come back down to reality, then I’m all for it.

Its ridiculous to give any coach (Not named Saban or Smart) more than a 5 year deal imo. Give your guy 5 years... if he's doing a great job after year 3, extend him another 2 or 3 years. A 10 year deal creates complacency and thats exactly what happened with Jimbo. Im afraid LSU will be dealing with similar situation in another 2 years.

And stop with the stupid extensions too

Kiffin makes 9.5 now. not gonna even give him a raise?

Someone hired that coach. And then someone hired his replacement. they’ve been ok at Wyoming and Kansas State.

just the single most important person at 95% of Athletic Department.
Let me ask you, who is the last coach to get hired from an FCS School and win a NC? it may be Tressel over 20 years ago.
the single most successful coach of the modern era was a Nc Winning coach hired at another school.

I’d be fine with a 10 year contract, but it’s the guarantees that are crazy. After 50% of the contract term has passed, I think either party should be able to walk away for nothing or next to nothing if no extension has been agreed upon.
But it’s gonna take many schools to reset the table because coaches and agents are going to keep pushing for the 10 year, fully guaranteed golden parachutes.

Depends how bad you want any given coach cause they have a say in the contract too.

Only 10 schools have won a national championship in the last 20 years. They are the top level programs. They don't have to hire lower level coaches. That doesn't mean those coaches couldn't win.
You give a guy like Kleiman or Leipold the resources at Texas A&M and they would do great.
I would hire a proven FCS/G5 coach over a P5 position coach like Orgeron, Dabo or Pittman.

Then that's not really a ten year contract. It is a five year contract with rights to extend it. And rights to extend it exist even if it doesn't say so.

or not.
people act like no one has ever thought this before.
Look at James Franklin. Won 9 games 2 years in a row at Vanderbilt. one of the greatest coaching performances ever. Better than Klieman is doing at KState. And he’s been good not great at Penn State. 85-38.
Leipold may be a good not great coach. Kansas rarely has even average coaches because they’re Kansas.

They removed all incentive to not suck by fully guaranteeing that contract.

1. Why is this pinned to the top
2. Isn’t BK’s contract just like this?

I don’t understand why people get caught up in the word “buyout”.
It’s a contract. Just like in professional sports like baseball & basketball, where the contract money is guaranteed.
Coaching contracts, especially at the top end of the profession, are guaranteed up until a small percentage for the most part. And sometimes fully.
Why?
Because it’s competitive. That is the only way you will get good coaches. If lsu doesn’t offer a guaranteed contract, then 1) do you really believe in that hire? & 2) Alabama will. Or A&M, or Florida.
