Agreed. We may have obscene amounts of money but sometimes you have to step back and look for the "good fit"

No one's a guarantee. Those G5 and FCS coaches bust at a high rate too. Jim Tressel was a great coach, he just happened to come from an FCS program. Most teams have looked for years for another Jim Tressel and haven't found him.
Also there's a penalty for being known as a school that's not willing to spend on coaches, the very best candidates aren't going to even consider you.
As an AD, how long do you think you have to hire these FCS coaches who don't work out before the board decides you don't know what you doing? ADs make hires like Jimbo because they're paid to get results, and it's not just their choice. Boosters and other powerful people have a say too.
If you're hiring low-budget coaches from FCS I'm sure the board will thank you for not putting the program in a financial bind but you'll still be out of a job if your coaches don't get results.

You could sell this idea, but would require a higher yearly salary than market rate
I.e. instead of paying a $7m guy that would normally get a 100% buyout, you pay him 10m with a 25% buyout
You still attract top talent but leave yourself some wiggle room. Plus the coach thinks he's betting on himself

Exactly.
A 10 year deal is fine if it's incentive laden, has a reduced buyout clause, and has offset language for when the coach gets another job.
A fully guaranteed deal 10 year deal for anyone who isn't in the midst of a Saban-esque multi year title run is madness.

Let's be honest though, Saban is incredibly underpaid. He should be making 50% more than the next closest

While I generally agree, I also submit: Jim Donnan.
Donnan made it to four FCS championships in six seasons, winning one, but his best season at UGA was good for second in the east.

I'd be for that too but the agents... they are the adversary in that space. Jimmy Sexton represents almost the full roster of SEC coaches and allowing a smaller compensation package in hurts his stable. I don't know a good way to combat that.

he’s not bad, but Penn Statw definitly hired him hoping for Big 10 and NCAA Championships and they haven’t made it to the playoffs.

It takes two sides to agree to a contract.

I think A&M has let it be known through its folks that the next coach will not be given that kind of contract, no matter who he is. You'll probably see a 3 year deal around 8 mill a year....and I'm saying for a top notch coach. The further down the pecking order the salary would drop.

Remember, kind sir, that you may be negotiating yet again with Sexton of Memphis who got Fisher his contract and then his extended contract. Sexton with his own private jet. Sexton who is the agent for coaches AND athletic directors and who has grown much, much richer in the most recent two decades.

That has a lot to do with their agents. Sexton has ruined college football.
