Just booked Spirit Airlines for first time. Experience? **Update 4/10:Spirit Cancelled**

Wife and I along with our 1 year old. I have never flown any of the budget airlines before. I of course have heard horror stories but I have also read recently that Spirit has really come a long way.
They offered a direct flight to our destination that no other major airline was offering on these days. We pre paid for our seats (have to with baby) as well as a checked bag as I read it’s cheaper that way.
Any tips, recommendations , or experience on what I am getting myself into ?

Update 4/10
Spirit cancelled our flight 2 days before departure! Only reason I was given was “operations”. Complete BS. Initially offered credit only , I complained and they finally gave me a refund. Still, trip plans ruined as everything right now is 1k a ticket plus. Guess I learned my lesson

I've never had a bad experience with them and use to fly them a lot when they offered $50 RT from New Orleans to Dallas.
If you know what to expect then you are good, it is like sitting in the back of the plane on a larger airplane.
Biggest issue I've heard is if your flight gets canceled you could be screwed as they only run a few a day to certain locations

I've found them to be fine for what they are. It is slightly cheaper to pay the baggage fees at booking, but then if you have to cancel the flight, you lose your airfare AND the baggage fees. Learned that one the hard way, so I'll be paying my baggage fees at check-in from now on.

The horror stories I’ve heard are when then cancel a flight and don’t have another one for 3 days. They refund you the $50 fare you paid them and you have to same day book with one of the majors for $1,000+

Take a cushion with you. Their seats are narrow and thin.
My arse hurt all the way from ATL to LAS.

ive had good experiences with them. I just booed a flight last night. The a la carte is definitely different and once you book, youre completely committed.

Have flown Spirit at least a dozen times, never had a issue. Those that pay the cheap Spirit fares and then complain about the lack of amenities should just do the obvious, and pay the usually significantly higher fare to fly the other airlines.

This is what I always say.
You should evaluate any purchase based on the value for your money. A Mustang isn’t a Corvette, a Motel 6 isn’t a Marriott, and Spirit isn’t Delta. But none of that matters because every product has a hierarchy of sorts and what’s important is the bang for your buck. In that regard, I think Spirit is fine.

I've done a few NOLA-HOU runs. It's not a nice airline and nothing about it is amazing, but for a 45 minute ride, who cares??? It's kind of like riding the airport rental car bus. Suck it up and go for it.
If they strand you, there are 20 UAL flights on that same run and it's not a bad drive. I would think differently if you were doing a 5+ hour flight as opposed to under 2 hours.

I have flown Spirit a handful of times and the 2 times I had a miserable experience was because the person that booked the flight (former boss) had the attitude that she should be treated like first class because she booked through her AmEx platinum and had recently flown in one of those pods on Delta One. After the 2nd trip I told her that I would book my own flights from now on in case she ever gets blacklisted from flying

I have flown them and Frontier about 5 times and the only bad experience I have had was a 1 hour delay on just 1/5 flights. I did noticed there were more turbulence on these flights than other flying experiences that I have had though. I know its probably not the plane, and just the pilots.

Spirit and Frontier are perfect for me because I’m a hardy solo traveler. I don’t really care where I sit, I can put all my stuff in a backpack under the seat, and delays (although they suck for everyone) aren’t going to cause me to miss a business meeting or something else really important.

It sounds like you know what you're getting into ahead of time and planned accordingly. As I;ve said in other threads, I'll always book with ne of the major carriers because of IRROPS and FF status but if you're flexible with your plans in the event of delays and buy the necessary add-ons ahead of time it'll be fine.

If you can avoid checking bags, that's a plus.
Seems lately when I fly with them... getting the bags off the airplane and onto the carousel takes a really long time.
Like an hour after landing.

It is fine as long as you don't mind getting charged for every little bag you carry on. I like the non stop to Las Vegas.

They up charge their way to higher costs. Others like a Delta will let you essentially bring on two bags for free before you check. Not so with Spirit. Beyond that, their lack of options for rescheduling flights puts pressure on any savings you may experience in the event of a cancellation. Comfort is non existent. So the longer you’re flying, the worse the experience.
I liken them to a Greyhound with wings and jet engines. If you need to save money, pull the trigger. But they make Southworst feel like charter service sometimes.

they are fine for shorter flights as long as you read the fine print and know what you are getting in to. I wouldn't really fly them on a longer flight.

We flew with them once from NOLA to Vegas direct and had no issues. I'd fly with them again in the future.

Have flown them several times non stop from nola to Vegas. 3 hours is my max trip in those seats. Haven't had any issues so far.
