Naples doesn’t interest me very much.
I agree re Naples the city, but Naples is one of my favorite cruise ports. We've done Pompeii, Capri and the Amalfi Coast from there on different occasions. All wonderful experiences.
re: Has anyone ever cruised a major cruise line out of Europe
Posted by NCTigerFan on 5/27/26 at 8:58 am to jkylejohnson
We've done a half dozen European cruises on Carnival -- always on a brand new ship doing European runs after being built in Italy and before making its way over for U.S. itineraries. Those were great experiences with great crews (as those itineraries were used as something of a crew reward for providing excellent service). 3 round trips from Rome, 1 Barcelona to Athens, and 2 round trips out of Dover.
We have another one booked on RCL's Rhapsody of the Seas next summer -- round trip from Athens going to Cyprus, Egypt and Santorini.

re: Need Excursion Recommendations: 7 Night Princess Cruise Southern Caribbean

We are doing the same in December, on the Crown Princess, but different ports (we hit St. Thomas, St Maarten, Antigua, St Lucia and Barbados) . Here's what we're doing in the couple of ports we have in common:
St Thomas: We've been there a lot, so we're taking the ferry to Water Island and renting a golf cart from Rachel's Rentals to explore the island on our own.
Barbados: We booked one of the snorkel tours through Savvy on the Bay Beach Club on Carlisle Bay, which includes RT transportation from the cruise port, a snorkel trip, and use of the club.

I live here and will echo the recommendations of:
- LeBauer/City City Park
- Greensboro Grasshoppers game (check schedule for post-game fireworks, which are surprisingly good)
- Greensboro Science Center
- Greensboro History Museum (within walking distance of the downtown parks and a nice diversion to learn about the city you’re visiting. I believe it's free, so no feeling of commitment to stay longer if you're not enjoying it)
Children’s Museum is great but my kiddo had pretty much aged of it by age 7-9. Guilford Military Park is also great, but did not interest my kiddo at that age. (I do agree it’s a nice place for a walk). We revisited at age 14, and it was still “boring”. YMMV depending on your kids’ interests.
The International Civil Rights Museum is phenomenal (also done at age 14, and she still talks about that years later). But there’s some heavy stuff in there so consider your ages (and perhaps look into a youth tailored tour?).
Check out Bourbon Bowl (bar + bowling) and/or Boxcar Bar + Arcade downtown for something adult-friendly while still entertaining the kids.
There’s a big water park just outside of town – Wet & Wild Emerald Pointe.

re: What is the best/cheapest way to book a hotel?
Posted by NCTigerFan on 4/17/26 at 9:38 am to hassan whiteside
My process:
- Use third party sites (typically hotels.com and booking.com) to find the hotel and price I would book third party if I was going that route.
- Book direct at that hotel, unless there's enough of a difference in price to take the risk of third party booking. Usually, though, I actually come out ahead booking direct with AAA or member program discounts.
- Forward confirmation email to HotelSlash. They log it and notify me if there's a cheaper price for the same hotel/room/dates. When I get an email from them notifying me of a lower price, I do the same thing as above. Check whether the lower price is now available direct, or decide whether the savings are worth it to cancel and rebook through HotelSlash.

re: Aix en Provence—best things to do?

It's been since 2016 since we were there, but we were in port in Marseilles from 800A to 500P and took a tour through Provence Connection Tours that included the market, wine tasting at a chateau, lunch, etc. I recall they did a good job.

I've noodled on a post-retirement ATW cruise and have some questions if you have time to respond:
1. Any logistical tips for arrangements back home for your house, mail, yard, etc. to be taken care of?
2. If you take any prescription medications, how does that work? I can only get a 30 or 90 day supply in advance. Do insurers make exceptions for travel plans like this or do you need to fill out-of-pocket?
3. Did you plan all of your excursions in advance? Are you doing cruise line excursions to simplify things, or did you research private excursions for all of these ports?
Thanks.

There are even apps now that will do the rebooking for you automatically.
Which one is your favorite? I've gone ahead and purchased the tickets, and it would be good for an app to automatically monitor for price reductions and rebook.

No, unfortunately. Our travel dates are fixed. We booked a cruise that leaves San Juan on the 27th and returns on the 3rd. Need to be home for Christmas Day and back at work on the 4th.
Anyone familiar with (holiday) airfares to Puerto Rico?
Posted by NCTigerFan on 2/11/26 at 8:14 pm
I need to travel from Charlotte to San Juan just after Christmas, over New Year's. The flights I want are currently ~$1100pp, which Google Flights says is "typical". Is that right? Do I go ahead and book, monitor the fare, and claim a credit for the difference if it drops? Or is it likely to drop in the next ~10 months? I'm buying several tickets so any insight is appreciated.

Allianz annual plan if you travel frequently enough, otherwise shop for the single-trip plan you need at insuremytrip.com. Very easy to shop/compare.

A couple of things my teen has enjoyed on cold/rainy days --
1. The Asheville Retrocade. (There's also the Asheville Pinball Museum downtown, but we haven't been.)
2. Asheville Pizza and Brewing has a movie theater with bar and food.

I used to, and would shop at insuremytrip.com. On the rare occasions I had claims, they were paid with no problem. Now, I just carry an annual, multi-trip policy through Allianz.

re: American Airlines Destroyed My Checked Bag - what would you do?
Posted by NCTigerFan on 6/3/25 at 12:45 pm to dred24
Did you claim your bags at the end of the flight from Europe and re-check them in the NE U.S. city? If not, then I'd argue that the 7-day period for damaged bags on an international flight applies instead of the 24-hour period for domestic flights.
Did the form they gave you list a deadline for filing a claim? If not, then I'd argue that they should have informed you in that way and, since it wasn't there, you had no reason to know there was a deadline.
I'd keep escalating within customer service and up to corporate if necessary. You can also complain in a public social media post and tag them.
Good luck.

I agree with Vic's on the River. You can make a reservation online HERE. I like their crawfish beignets with Tabasco syrup.

I like farmers' markets and street fairs. My husband always hits the spice aisle at a grocery store (he's the cook in the family) and a sporting goods store/department (says he likes to see what they use to hunt and fish there).
re: Road Trip VA to Niagara Falls
Posted by NCTigerFan on 4/21/25 at 12:38 pm to GeekedUp
We loved rafting the New River Gorge, but that would be quite a bit out of your way, whereas Hershey (and Gettysburg) would be on the way. I'm guessing living in VA that your kids would have already been to DC, but, if not, that's on the way too. Philly (~95 miles from Hershey) is more on your route than Pittsburgh (~215 miles).

I'll second this. It's a lot of fun.
One of the best weekends we had was inspired by this YouTube video. We stayed at the Western Front Hotel in St. Paul, VA. They have a hangout area called the Roost and a big backyard area with lawn games. My teen really enjoyed the opportunity to hang out with other kids. Rented ATV from the hotel one day and had a blast on the Spearhead Trails. Next day went tubing on the Clinch River. Stopped off and did the Creeper Trail on the way back home to NC.
