I’m not tech savvy at all. My wife’s laptop just crashed. My son, who has a champagne appetite, told us it would probably cost us $1,000 - $1,200 to get a good laptop. I’m just trying to avoid over purchasing.

My wife uses her laptop for:

Quickbooks
Microsoft Office
Zoom

She does use Remote PC so that she can do the bookkeeping that she does for a few organizations.

there are no video games played and she doesn’t use the laptop for streaming

How much Ram?
How much SSD?
Which Generation of Intel Core?

I know I need a webcam
She’s used to a 17” screen
Anything else?

She stores files and works from Drop Box so little data is stored on the laptop.

Thank you for your help.

Edited to delete the pC I was considering.I’m more interested in the specs.

Not a fast processor, and lacks enough RAM, even with the things that she is looking to do on the computer.

Just because Amazon is playing a pricing game doesn't mean that PC is worth $959.

Average price for that machine, non amazon, has been less that $377 amazon has it for now. It's probably a $350 machine.

Go reputable like Dell or Lenovo. Amazon is half scams. You want at least an i5 and 8gb RAM, min.

check to see if any lingering Presidents Day sales...but would recommend i5/ryzen 5 processor, 16GB RAM, and 512GB SSD

I picked up a gateway with similar for around $350 from walmart. it does the job as a spare and kids use it at times for school stuff...i have a dell latitude i bought for business use for $700 about 2yrs ago with similar or better specs...

If you decide to spend around 1k or more, look at a Mac Laptop. Super fast, has awesome battery life and Quickbooks and Office for Mac work fine.

SSD is the most important thing. Based on what you've said (limited local storage because of DropBox), 256GB is sufficient; she's not installing Skyrim or ElderScrolls Online, etc.

8GB of RAM is sufficient too, but take 16GB if the price is palatable. If she often has 50+ browser tabs open at once, 16 may be the preferred route, but I am pretty sure that's not happening in her case.

Generation of Intel/AMD is totally irrelevant given the use case. In her case, even an Intel i3 (which is a model, not a generation) would be fine.

And also consider it may open up a ton more options just to buy her a big monitor for sub $200, and ignore the screen size requirement. 17" is hefty for a laptop, and will often push you into gaming (ie, more expensive laptops.) Since she does bookkeeping, having a $200 28" wide monitor, potentially with an add on keyboard with a real 10 key number pad may make her much happier than a 17" laptop on its own.

Highly recommend an MS surface laptop. Haven't looked at them a bit to see if it's in your price range but mine has been excellent.

I've had good luck with the Dell outlet. Purchased several Latitudes and they've all been great. You get the full 3 year Latitude warranty.

This Lenovo is about to be released, and has a 10 key numpad. Under $1k in most configs.

+1 for the Lenovo ThinkPad. We deploy these at work and I like them so much that I got one for myself. Reasonable price and nice build.

I'm not his wife, but not a fan of anything under 15" Looks like those are 14".

Just my preference, but I noticed he said she was use to 17".

This one is on sale for $369.99. It has a smaller SSD but a faster processor. Upgrade the SSD with the savings if you need the extra space.

Really, the only thing you can't skimp on is processor. Everything else can be upgraded if it is insufficient.

Genuine question: in 2023, is there anyone on the planet who uses the little red nub thing over the track pad?
