I believe this Mahdi will be the anti Christ. Islam says:

Let’s drive a wedge and foment distrust between the IRGC leaders who want to live vs those who are willing to die.

We have well-trained and very expert US military assets that were created to execute exactly that kind of military mission. These folks reside on Fort Bragg at the United States Army Special Operations Command (Airborne).
I have no idea whether we are currently using any of them in that role. My guess is that we are not, and that the plan is just to continue this "talking" with Iran until Trump is out of power, then the USA will make peace with the IRGC.
The IRGC will then be absolutely committed to hitting the USA's cities and civilians with nukes and dirty bombs.

The mistake you make here is thinking Iranians, or really ANY middle eastern, Muslim country thinks. They can't agree to terms because they don't understand it. They're too ignorant as a people. Without generalizing or trying to be insulting, these people are not civilized enough to understand how the world works. They don't understand ceasefires because it is a concept they aren't capable of grasping. They don't understand why war would end. They don't understand peace. They don't understand negotiating. They live in and worship a culture of death. In their mind, "ceasefire" is a term the West uses for them to try to gain some upper hand. They think it's followed by more war, which gains them a martyr's death, which is their entire goal. It's the goal in their minds for their wives, for their children, their grandchildren, etc.
You can't negotiate with cavemen. That's who you're trying to argue with. A cave man. We're like "We will stop all the bombing if you agree to not have a nuclear weapon." Their response, in their minds is "We have to kill you. We hear you want us to stop developing nukes but we must kill you. We have to kill everyone. We have to kill the Jews, and we have to kill you now - and forevermore."
Us: "You have to open the Strait of Hormuz"
Them: "You have to die. You have to die now."
Us: "You will need to stop enriching Uranium"
Them: "Death to all infidels. You must die."
That's what you're dealing with. They're cave dwelling, simple cave people. There's no negotiating because they can't understand what that is.

Vance tried to explain this apparently. They have a messianic tradition, in leadership, that believes this action precedes the return of Mahdi.

It's about retention of power. They could have instant peace by stepping aside and letting their people vote. Sure things are bad for them. But as Lucifer explained in Paradise Lost:
